  • Well-equipped family-friendly site a 45-minute drive from Bordeaux
  • Pomerol half an hour’s drive; Arcachon an hour and 20 minutes
  • Swimming pool and waterslides; playground and pétanque; bike hire
You don’t have to be a wine connoisseur to stay at Camping Bel Air – though the fact that this site sits among some of the most renowned Bordeaux vineyards ought to whet the appetite (or the thirst…) of even the most lukewarm of wine enthusiasts. Libourne, Pomerol and Saint-Émilion are half an hour’s drive away, on the other side of the river Dordogne; while the river Garonne and the city of Bordeaux are a 45-minute drive to the west. But before you set off to make the most of your vinous surroundings, you might want to get to know the site. This is a family-friendly (and dog-friendly, too) spot with facilities such as an aquatic park with a heated swimming pool for your morning laps and another for young paddlers (plus waterslides); a play area and games room; and an educational farm with resident goats and llamas. Also on site are a pétanque court and miniature golf. Bike rental is available, and from the nearby town of Créon (10 minutes by bike), it’s possible to join the V80 Canal des Deux Mers to head west to Sadirac or east to La Sauve (20 minutes by bike to either) – and beyond, perhaps stopping at local vineyards and wine cellars to sample the latest vintages. And if you feel a little sore after your cycling exertions, a Thai massage (back on site) should loosen up any tight muscles.

Local attractions

A large adventure park in the middle of lush woodland, Arbor-et-sens (15 minutes’ drive) has treetop trails for all ages and levels of bravery, plus ziplines. It’s a short drive from there to Lake Baurech, where EXO 33 Baurech téléski is an aquatic park with inflatable courses and waterskiing. On the banks of the Garonne, Bordeaux (45 minutes) is arguably the wine capital of France. You can learn all about this fundamental local industry at the Cité du Vin (a modern museum shaped like a huge decanter) and the Musée du Vin et du Négoce de Bordeaux. Or just wander around the city stopping at cosy wine bars and bistros for a glass of Merlot. Arcachon (an hour and 20 minutes) is an elegant town protected by the strongest waves of the Atlantic Ocean by the Cap Ferret headland. Relax on the sandy beaches or hike to the top of the Dune du Pilat; then catch a ferry across Arcachon Bay to check out the Cap Ferret lighthouse.
