  • Scenic Bordeaux site with views of pretty Château Rauzan
  • A 20-minute drive from Saint-Émilion, five minutes from Rauzan winery
  • Pool, sauna, hot tub, snack bar and weekly market during high season
Châteaux, vin et pétanque… Does it get more classically français than that? For hols that combine the three, make tracks for Camping du Vieux Châteaux, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the Gironde village of Rauzan. This may be the Aquitaine, but it’s also – more importantly? – Bordeaux territory. Leaning in to wine explorations can begin right on site, where there’s a bar that’s open whenever reception is. As well as stocking the usual sodas, beers, teas and coffees, the bar carries a selection of wines from the nearby Caves de Rauzan, a co-operative winery five minutes from base where visitors can take tours and tastings if anything back on site tickles tastebuds for more. When it comes to châteaux, the site’s particularly well-placed. Château Rauzan can be seen from many spots around site, including during poolside loungers, and a short walk along a tree-sheltered path will land guests at the gates of the 13th-century pile. While out and about, consider following the local geocache trail (with 24 caches), which can be joined from site. If staying put appeals more, there’s plenty on site to keep the whole family entertained, including a playground, multisports ground (for the all-important footie, volleyball and basketball) and pétanque court. During high season guests can take a dip in the pool, grownups can soak in the hot tub, hungers can be satisfied at the snack bar in the evenings, and there's a weekly on-site market.

Local attractions

Has the thought of Bordeaux generated a thirst for vin? That won’t be hard to slake hereabouts. There are a handful of wineries (some in châteaux, some not) between 20 and 45 minutes’ drive away, and the site’s about half an hour from another famed wine-producing region, Médoc. Once tipples have been taken, clear heads with a foray in the great wide open, starting with a pitstop five minutes from base at la Grotte Célestine, the only underground river in Gironde that’s open to the public. There are rambles aplenty to be had in Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park (55 minutes) too, while those happier pedalling along can join the disused-railway Roger Lapébie cycle route 10 minutes away in Bellepond (or do the whole 45-kilometre stretch by starting in Sauveterre-de-Guyenne) and bike towards the city of Bordeaux. Whether cycling or driving, Bordeaux (50 minutes) is a must. The pretty city has something for everyone, from botanical gardens and the Cité du Vin to an opera house and a submarine-base art museum. For something smaller, opt for Saint-Émilion (20 minutes) instead – the UNESCO World Heritage site is a medieval village with a monolithic church, cloisters and caves, and is a famed wine producer.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Clean amenities- regularly checked and thoroughly cleaned by staff. Visitors also encouraged to take responsibility for maintaining reasonable hygienic/safety standards (eg - squeegee the floor after shower) Snack bar provided tasty food Good range of drinks at bar (house red wine was delicious!) Friendly and welcoming staff who provided recommendations for things to do nearby Range of on-site activities Free use of library and games library Little shop Clear water points around camp, indicating which are drinkable. Free Filtered water available Composting and recycling centres, encouraged visitors to be more sustainable Flexible with check in/out Updated board with local activities/areas of interest for visitors Communal TV WI-FI works well across most of the campsite and you get two hours free to check it works for you before buying your required package.

Disliked: Pool was a little tired looking but clean. Those who identify as Male need to ensure they bring speedos or tight fitting shorts (think Daniel Craig in James Bond). Board shorts are banned (we had to buy new shorts for my husband in order to use the pool) Paying for Wi-Fi - only because it is free in so many other campsites. Mosquitoes!! Lots and lots of mosquitoes! Bring your bug repellent! BBQs not allowed on individual pitches, safety reasons I assume, but were allowed on the gravelled area. These were such minor issues that I wouldn’t really worry at all about them.

Liked: Peaceful, well organised and clean site with good facilities. Really helpful staff and information on surrounding area. Nicely stocked little shop and just a short walk via the chateau to Rauzan itself.

Disliked: Nothing.
