  • A short drive to vineyards and châteaux in Bordeaux and Saint-Emilion
  • Pool, football pitch and restaurant with wood-fired pizza oven
Ready your active self and pack up your sightseeing spirit, for there's plenty to see and do around Camping l'Eau Vive, on the banks of the Dronne river in the Gironde department. This relaxing retreat lies in a peaceful spot across five lush acres, a short and pleasant amble from the centre of Les Églisottes-et-Chalaures village. A train station is half a kilometre away too, for getting to and from if you’re travelling sans car. A stay here will have you right next door to a tennis court, and within easy reach of a horse riding centre and guided canoe trips from Coutras. A go-karting and motor racing track is at the Circuit de Haute Saintonge. If you need a bit of kit for your adventuring, Camping l'Eau Vive guests can hire canoes and rowing boats to take directly to the water’s edge, and bikes are available to rent too should one prefer to tour on terra firma. Facilities at Camping L'Eau Vive include a pool with adjoining sunbathing space, as well as areas for volleyball, football, pétanque and ping pong for sporty sorts. A playground is also to hand to entertain the kids. Eats on site are sorted at the communal barbecues, or should you prefer to relinquish tong duty, the on-site restaurant serves burgers, woodfired pizzas and the like to eat in or take away.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Very spacious pitches with equal amount of shade and sun if required. Fresh croissants were good. Great location and not too far from the town

Disliked: You need an adapter plug for electrics. Fortunately we had one.

Electric optional grass pitch

Electric optional grass pitch

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The site was quiet and the toilet block was clean despite it looking old. The showers were also hot.

Disliked: We arrived thinking we could relax around the indoor pool that is advertised on PitchUp (the outdoor pool was yet to open for the season) but were informed after asking that they didn’t have an indoor pool at the moment. This was quite disappointing. Furthermore, the photos on pitch up seemed to show lots of tent/ caravan pitches, but it seemed that the majority of them had been filled with static caravans/ huts. Although the site was quiet, this, for us, wasn’t as pretty as the pictures suggested it was.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The pool area was good. Large pitch on field. Seating area near pizza oven looked attractive and recently installed.

Disliked: Most of the site including reception and toilet block needed upgrading. No shade or physical boundaries on pitches for motorhome on the field area. No shop Customer service of certain staff needs improvement. Very abrupt with several (British) campers including us. Then heard this member of staff complaining to other French campers about the British! I wouldn’t return here again

Local attractions

After your canoeing on the Dronne, head to the tennis court 200 metres from the site’s entrance; golfing days too can be spent at the local golf course in Gardegan-et-Tourtirac. If you’re more of a horsey sort, a horse riding centre is eight kilometres from base, or watery types can get more Dronne river action with guided tours from Coutras. Should you be rather more interested in trying local tipples, take the tourist train from Saint-Emilion around the local châteaux and wine cellars, tasting wines as you make your merry (and increasingly merrier) way around. If you’re a fan of delving into local history, 25 kilometres away in Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is a spectacular subterranean church – the largest of its sort in Europe – carved from stone way back in the 12th century. Also within easy reach is the historical show in Castillon-la-Bataille, swashbuckling its way through depictions of the battle that marked the end of the Hundred Years' War.
