Pretty, peaceful, packed with things for the kids to do… and eco-friendly too. Dordogne site Camping des Tourbières, in a rural location 600 metres from Site Naturel des Tourbières, a Natura 2000 site which has 65 hectares of protected space for walks and fishing. Five minutes’ drive away from Vendoire too, it really has a lot going for it. Come along here and you'll be staying in a spacious park full of greenery and trees, where the owners are doing their best to make sure that their site has only a minimal impact on the environment. That includes providing facilities for recycling and composting, using returnable glassware in the bar and feeding restaurant waste to the goats and chickens (who seem pretty happy with this solution…) Alongside these facilities are all sorts of things designed to make family holidays go with a swing: the outdoor pool and paddling pool are particularly popular features, but guests also have access to a multisports ground, a large playground, a pétanque court, and lots of other games including table football and table tennis. And that’s not all… a library and toy library mean hours of entertainment without the need to bring lots of kit, and in high season you’ll be able to join in with various activities including treasure hunts, yoga classes and horse-drawn carriage rides. Meals are easily sorted here, too – start your day right by ordering bread and pastries to be delivered, then for lunch you can pick up supplies from the food shop or order picnic sandwiches to take on your outings. Evenings can be spent cooking over your barbecue or settling in at the restaurant. There’s also a barbecue night on Wednesdays, a pizza night on Fridays and a street food truck on Saturdays.

Hutte 2 bedroom lodge (three person)

Liked This is a wonderful campsite, the owners have thought of everything. The pools and children's facilities are spot on , quality restaurant, super clean showers etc . We stayed in a small lodge and it superceded our expectations. We were there the last weekend in may and it was quiet but there is so much well maintained land that I couldn't ever imagine it feeling crowded.

Disliked Nothing to dislike at all.

For something energetic, Base de loisirs de Poltrot (20 minutes’ drive) has treetop trails, an orienteering course and an adventure playground, or you can go canoeing/kayaking on the Dronne with JFC Canoe Kayak (half an hour). A highlight for many visitors to the area is a trip to a château or two… from here your nearest ones are the classic turreted Château de Villebois-Lavalette (10 minutes), the fabulously restored Château de La Mercerie (15 minutes) and the stunning waterside Château de Bourdeilles (35 minutes). A little further afield, you may also like to spend days in Brantôme, Angoulême (both 35 minutes) or Périgueux (an hour), exploring prehistoric Grotte de Villars (45 minutes) or trying watersports at Le Grand Etang de la Jemaye (35 minutes).
