General

  • Friendly Dordogne site in a woodland setting
  • A short walk from medieval Sarlat
  • Pool, terrace café, central lodge and shop with foie gras and confit

There are oh so many trés magnifique medieval destinations in France. So much so that a mere start upon a travel list of them can lead to envy overload, and from there a desire to dump all one's responsibilities for a carefree travelling time around these spectacular old sights. But! If you don't have time for a prolonged hol of a year or two (bah), give spectacular Sarlat priority on your sightseeing list of old French towns: you will, most definitely, see why this is when you get there.

And to rest your weary head after a long day's medieval meandering? Give Indigo Camping Sarlat priority for bedding down on your sightseeing stay, as it's less than a kilometre from ye olde town. It's also in a peaceful woodland setting stretching over seven Dordogne hectares if you seek space after a day in town – and has the services and facilities to keep you fed, watered and sprucely clean for days on site in between.

The centre of the site is its main stone building housing a colourful and roomy central lounge with books, board games and free wifi available throughout the season. Outdoors, there's a pool and a paddling pool, a tennis court and a scenically set playground with swings, slide, seesaw and grassy room alongside for supervising smalls in serene style.

Food? Also covered and also relaxing: take your book or tablet to the terrace of the summer café and snack bar, for bites such as homemade pizza, or source regional produce including foie gras and duck confit at the Camping Sarlat shop. A bread and croissant order service is to hand too: just tell the staff what you want and pick up your freshly baked French goods in the morning to fuel yourself for a day in Sarlat.

Great terraced pitches with good washroom and toilet facilities. Nice size indoor and outdoor pool. Staff are all very welcoming and helpful. Washing machine and dryers available on site which is always handy on a camping holiday. All pitches have trees which proved good shade in the summer.

The general facilities were excellent the staff were very pleasant and helpful. The pool was fantastic to cool down after the walk back from Sarlat.

    Disliked:

I think some of the pitches are not suitable for larger motorhomes. We had to move because I could just not level my unit on the first pitch I was offered. Some of the trees also made it very difficult to drive a motorhome around the site.

Could I suggest that the site review which pitches are suitable and only offer these to motorhomes when booking. If there are non available it would be better to say you are full rather than offer a pitch which is more suitable for tents.

I think you should also make it clear that the walk back from Sarlat is quite steep. Some people could find it quit difficult.

I loved the location of Sarlat. Its about 3 kilometres from the station, if your travelling without a car and to the medieval town about a kilometre. The park is hilly and has plenty of trees which makes it look beautiful and in nature. You can wake up to the hoot of owls, which I loved. There was a nice pool and it felt good at the end of a hot day. The bathrooms are clean and close enough to all so there never really was a queue. The people in the office/cafe make great coffee, and ordered in a range of baguettes and croissants everyday for their residents and they always had a smile on their face. I met people from all around the world. My tent also had anything I needed and was located under shady trees which was great on the 36 degree days. I'll definitely be back.

The cleanliness of the site, sanitary facilities and the friendliness of the staff.

    Disliked:

The fact the outdoor pool couldn’t be used due to some work around the pool area. I feel that should have been carried out in the cooler months. Also there were mature pine trees around our pitch, which contained the nests of pine processionary caterpillars. These are very dangerous to small children if touched and a dog can die if it licks one as the hairs can cause their throats to swell up. The nests should be taken down and burnt.

Local attractions

The capital of the Périgord Noir region, Sarlat is so famed as one of France's top medieval towns partly because of its beaut buildings and partly as it's avoided extensive redevelopment. This latter means, of course, that a wander around Sarlat's small alleys and handsome passageways can have the imaginatively minded musing that they're a knight in Middle Ages or Renaissance times: do give it an adventurous go.

Among the top sights to see are the cathedral, the town's 15th and 16th century mansions and the Benedictine abbey, as well as the main square of the Place de la Liberté and the big indoor food market. At the Manoir de Gisson, zip up the bell tower in a glass elevator to see Sarlat laid out below.

As you're in the Dordogne, peaceful countryside days and outdoor activities are easily reached from the site too: you could go kayaking along the Dordogne river, hike the surrounding valley, or pedal along the splendid landscapes of the local greenway. One excellent option is to take a trip in a traditional gabare boat to see some of the Périgord's most glitzy châteaux from the river, including Montfort, Castelnaud, Fayrac, Beynac and Milandes.

Also recommended by the Camping Sarlat team are days at Castelnaud (14 kilometres) and its castle with the view over the Dordogne valley, Beynac, Marqueyssac and Roque Gageac, and sampling much of the local cuisine at Vitrac (eight kilometres), Vézac (nine kilometres) and Domme (14 kilometres).

Dordogne beaches including Carsac Aillac, Castelnaud, La Roque Gageac, St Vincent de Cosse and St Julien de Lampon are all within 17 kilometres of the site.
