  • Peaceful, family-run Dordogne campsite
  • Set in 26 acres of the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord Limousin
  • On-site bar and pizzeria, outdoor pool and fishing lake
You'll feel right at home at Le Lieu, a peaceful, friendly and family-run Dordogne site in the Périgord Vert within the Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park. The site spreads over 26 acres of green scenery, with plenty of space for all, a private fishing lake, and woodland and riverside walks. A village shop, bar, bakery and restaurant are all in the small village of St Jory de Chalais five minutes' walk away. A swimming lake with beach is within 15 kilometres' drive. Amicable and helpful owners Lorna and Russ haven't stopped there with their tiptop facilities and amenities: Le Lieu also has an outdoor pool, a play area, free wifi, and a fully licensed bar and pizzeria. This pretty place is just the ticket for a roomy and peaceful getaway, or to use as a base for getting out into all on offer around the Dordogne. At just four kilometres from the N21, it's also a most handy stopover for travellers on their way to southern France, Spain and Portugal – but when you see what's on offer here, you'll likely want to stay at least another few days…

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Beautiful site and lovely owners, very welcoming and helpful. Pool cold but great swim and very refreshing. Pitched under the trees, with plenty of space and 2 very friendly Robins visited us each day. Toilet block and showers very clean, with handy plastic storage boxes for keeping your clothes dry, when in the shower. Washing up bowls provided, made a nice touch.

Great bar area, both inside and out and pizzas very good.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked As everyone says… we really liked the deep pool, the great pizzas, the quietness, the friendly bar, the big pitches, the clean toilets, the cheap washing machine…

Disliked We left early because my teenagers were restless. They said the field was great but the climbing frame is very wobbly and in need of attention. (Étang de St Esteph was ok but you needed to prebook the paddleboards on a busy day).
They both really stressed about the toilet and shower locks not working.
I’d have loved to have other food on offer as well as pizza..
The WiFi only works near the bar.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Really excellent site. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. The pitches are close together but have large hedges between giving a good sense of privacy. Lots of small things “just work”. For example, they provide large plastic boxes with lids in the washrooms so that your clothes don’t get wet whilst showering.

The location is great for dropping into places like Brantolme or Perigeux.

There are also great runs nearby. My son and I did 15km each day on a route that the owners shared with us.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked This is a brilliant little place. Charline was extremely welcoming and friendly when we arrived and made us feel at ease as well as at home. We liked that we could choose our own pitch out of the pitches available on our arrival. The pitches are a really good size and semi private surrounded by hedges and set in a semi wooded area of mature trees. The toilet/shower/wash facilities are really good and clean. Toilet roll and hand was provided. €3 for the washing machine is excellent value. There is a tumble dryer also but we didn't use it. We just hung our washing out. There is a communal fridge/freezer should you wish to use it. The pool area is lovely. There is on site wifi. It struggles a little to reach in the camping pitch areas but our girls felt to at ease to go and sit up at the bar/restaurant area and use the wifi. The bar/restaurant areas are lovely. The pizzas are up there with the best we've ever had. The deserts are amazing as well. There is enough to do on site apart from the pool, with table tennis/badminton and volleyball. There is also a small fishing lake on site. The bakery is less than a 10min walk into the local village for all your French bread needs. The staff on site are so welcoming and helpful. Charline is like a busy little bee. She never seems to stop. Its obvious they are working very hard all the time to maintain the high standards on this site and it shows. We felt very peaceful amongst the trees during out stay at Le Lieu. Charline speaks extremely good English and god love her, she put up with and helped me with my terrible French. We would definitely stay here again.

Disliked These are not dislikes as we loved our time at Le Lieu and would definitely stay again. There was an issue with some of the locks on the toilet and shower doors. They were very difficult to lock at times. I spoke to Charline about it and she was aware of the issue. A nice addition would be a hand dryer next to the hand washing sink in the toilet area. The showers are really very good. A nice little control over the temperature of the shower so that you could adjust it hotter or colder to your liking would be a nice extra. Although I have to say, the showers were always of a lovely warm temperature. If I'm being really over critical, there may have been 1 or 2 cob webs in the toilet/washing areas but so what, It is in a woodland setting. Some of the pitches are a fair distance from the electrical hubs. Not a problem for us as we have and extra long electric supply lead. So, remember to bring yours or you can get one on site and leave a deposit.

Le Pod camping pod

Liked Absolutely loved this site, Charline and Julien have made a little corner of paradise in the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park. We stayed in the little hut for 2 nights and both slept very well. The little kitchen area is well-appointed with cups, plates and utensils(but bring a cooker) but you'll be eating one of their delicious pizzas up at the bar anyway! The pool is brilliant, the bar is well-stocked and Charline is a mine of information. With its spacious pitches, well-established trees and little fishing pond, this site sits in golden silence and offers a very welcome retreat for weary travellers from the everyday world.

Local attractions

The spectacular Dordogne, with its splendid landscapes and scenery, prehistoric and ancient sites, jaw-dropping châteaux and deep dark caves, is a rightly popular place in France for visitors from within the country and all over the world. And then – mais oui – there's the cuisine: make sure to make room for Dordogne duck and goose, truffles, cheese, Bergerac and Monbazillac wines… For outdoorsy days/attempts to burn off laden heaps of Dordogne eats, a swimming lake (and beach) are 15 kilometres away at Grand Étang de Saint Saud; many kilometres of cycle trails are nearby, and canoes can be hired to explore the Dronne, Vézère and Dordogne rivers. The Le Lieu owners also particularly recommend the splendid subterranean experience of Villars Cave, 14 kilometres from base, as well as the spectacular châteaux at Puyguilhem (15 kilometres) and Hautefort (30 kilometres). Within day trip distance are the World War II memorial and museum at Oradour-sur-Glane; the cathedral and Roman remains of Périgueux, and the fab medieval centre of Limoges, all within 45 kilometres. Bergerac and Sarlat are both 75 kilometres away.
