General

  • Peaceful, family-run Dordogne campsite
  • Set in 26 acres of the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord Limousin
  • Onsite bar and restaurant, outdoor pool and fishing lake

You'll feel right at home at Camping Maisonneuve, a peaceful, friendly and family-run Dordogne campsite in the Périgord Vert within the Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park.

The site spreads over 26 acres of green scenery, with plenty of space for all, a private fishing lake, and woodland and riverside walks. A village shop, bar, bakery and restaurant are all in the small village of St Jory de Chalais five minutes' walk away. A swimming lake with beach is within 15 kilometres' drive.

Amicable and helpful owners Lorna and Russ haven't stopped there with their tiptop facilities and amenities: Maisonneuve also has an outdoor pool for splashing and a sauna for pampering, a play area to occupy the kids while you're doing either, free wifi, and a fully licensed bar and restaurant. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed on site.

This pretty place is just the ticket for a roomy and peaceful getaway, or to use as a base for getting out into all on offer around the Dordogne. At just four kilometres from the N21, it's also a most handy stopover for travellers on their way to southern France, Spain and Portugal – but when you see what's on offer here, you'll likely want to stay at least another few days…

Campsite is lovely, very relaxed and informal with plenty of green space for dog walking. It is in a quiet location within walking distance of the small village and reasonable driving distance to some bustling towns. However, we would suggest that for a more typical Dordogne experience you need to travel further south. Showers and loos are adequate and clean if somewhat outdated. Russ, Lorna and family are wonderful hosts and the bar/restaurant is a great place, both to meet other campers, and to eat and drink. We had some superb food served by Lorna and Russ is the most obliging and convivial landlord! We would certainly return to this site if our travels take us this way again.

    Owners made us very welcome.
    Lovely meal at their restaurant.
Campers were very social, but site was quiet.
Good walk through forest and lanes.

    Disliked:

Some pitches difficult to get in to, (our motorhome is 7m long x 2.5m wide and 2.9m high).
Some pitches require a long electric cable (25m) and a long water hose (20m). Service point water taps are not easy to fit a hose to.

  • Liked:

The location and beautiful grounds of the site with extensive meadow walks and forest walks for dog owners,
The great food and service in the restaurant.
Russ and Lorna did everything they could to help us when we had car problems and ran us around to the garage and the vets for the dog.
Others campers who proved it wasn't a one-off experience as they return year after year and still sing the praises of the site and staff.
Wonderful time spent here - we will return.

    Disliked:

Just a note that you must have a 25 metre electric cable and a French 2 pin adapter - not a criticism. Just advice for new visitors.

Lovely warm welcome from Rus and Lorna

The site itself is beautiful, set in the countryside, surrounded by quiet roads, ideal for cycling /running. Ability to chose our pitch on arrival, which was appreciated.

Very friendly site, clean facilities and really nice mixture of nationalities. Very nice food at the restaurant and good atmosphere at the bar in the evenings (locals popping in). Our girls loved cycling around the site and made lots of friends with other kids, was nice to give them some freedom to explore)

Loads to do in the local area (within 15-60 min drive) Lorna was very helpful with suggestions - Espace Hermaline was a big hit with the kids (gorgeous lake, cool zipwire and high-ropes course in the trees - very reasonably priced). Grotto Villars, very interesting case system with drawings from Cro-magnon man and Canoeing in Brantome all recommended.

    Disliked:

Wifi was broken when we stayed (not a big deal)
Didn't like having to book for dinner as like to be flexible on holidays, but understand why the policy is in place (Rus very kindly fit us in as and when he could, so fine if you can be flexible)

Great camp site, with excellent pitches for tents. Excellent washing, shower and toilet facilities, fridge and freezer and washing machine if you needed it. Great swimming pool, never crowded, had it to ourselves most of the time and the site has a wonderful bar and restaurant which is used by a lot of the local people. Can't really fault it and the kids loved it as well. The owners run a great site, very laid back and sociable, good job guys.

    Disliked:

Not a lot really, if I was going to be picky the pool was cold but you soon warmed up, all good really.

There is lots to like regarding this family run campsite. The owners are welcoming and helpful as are the other staff. The pitches are of a good size and all located near the (clean) shower block. Electric hook-ups are available. The pool is basic but entirely adequate and rarely busy. We did not have great weather and as a consequence had to see what was around. We found loads to look at and do including swimming lakes, pretty towns and markets. The local bakery was great. It was a great campsite to relax at.

    Disliked:

Although we would recommend this site and would return, there are a couple of points. Showers were a bit hit and miss. Often really cold or too hot. Some pitches were not that flat. Other than that it was great for our large family (5 children aged 10 - 19).

Local attractions

The spectacular Dordogne, with its splendid landscapes and scenery, prehistoric and ancient sites, jaw-dropping châteaux and deep dark caves, is a rightly popular place in France for visitors from within the country and all over the world. And then – mais oui – there's the cuisine: make sure to make room for Dordogne duck and goose, truffles, cheese, Bergerac and Monbazillac wines…

For outdoorsy days/attempts to burn off laden heaps of Dordogne eats, a swimming lake (and beach) are eight kilometres away at Grand Étang de Saint Saud; many kilometres of cycle trails are nearby, and canoes can be hired to explore the Dronne, Vézère and Dordogne rivers.

The Camping Maisonneuve owners also particularly recommend the splendid subterranean experience of Villars Cave, 14 kilometres from base, as well as the spectacular châteaux at Puyguilhem (15 kilometres) and Hautefort (30km).

Within day trip distance are the World War II memorial and museum at Oradour-sur-Glane; the cathedral and Roman remains of Périgueux, and the fab medieval centre of Limoges, all within 45 kilometres. Bergerac and Sarlat are both 75 kilometres away.
