  • Small family-run site on three hectares just outside Saint-Cassien
  • A five-minute drive to Monpazier; half an hour to the Dordogne river
  • Swimming pool, petting zoo, playground and summer bar on site
After you’ve been running hospitality businesses for several years, what next? Well, you set up your own, of course, putting into practice all the things you’ve learned over the years and making your place the very best it can be. That’s exactly what the Anglo-French couple running Le Pré des Chenes have done, setting up their site to welcome guests in the same way they’d welcome old friends at home. What you’ll find here is a small family-run site set on three hectares of an old meadow at the top of a small hill bordered by ancient oaks just outside the Dordogne’s tiniest village Saint-Cassien. Your hosts have lived here for about 20 years, so they’re able to point you towards all the best things to do and places to eat in the area. They’re fluent in both French and English so can help guests of various nationalities find their way about. Days out nearby might take you on canoe trips, woodland walks or fishing days, up into the trees at an adventure park or down into ancient caves. They’ll probably also take you sooner or later to the bastide of Monpazier (five minutes’ drive) to explore the medieval town or pick up supplies in the shops. Time spent on site is also an option too: you’ll have access to an outdoor pool, a playground with sandpit, and a petting zoo with rabbits and guinea pigs to meet. There's also a small bar that’s been set up in the old tobacco barn and opens on summer evenings for drinks and ice creams (plus some basics like bread, milk and pasta).

Local attractions

Start your local exploration in the bastide of Monpazier – it’s only a few minutes’ drive away and a fabulous place for a stroll through the historic fortified gates and around the medieval streets. For more of a taste of the area’s history, plan an outing to the impressive 16th-century Château de Biron (10 minutes’ drive) too. To spend time out in the open, there are plenty of walking trails around (including some leading from the site), and you can go fishing or walking at the lakes around Tourliac (five minutes). Getting out on the Dordogne river is a possibility too, with several canoe outfits about half an hour’s drive away, or you can view the world from above on the ziplines at Parc en Ciel (15 minutes). Evening outings? It’s time to explore local villages, where regular markets pop up in the summer for guests to buy local food and eat it at the long sociable tables – often meeting interesting folk along the way.

Liked: The space and tranquility of the generous pitches. Spotless facilities. Bar and food available if a coffee or cold beer is needed. Beautiful pool and a very easy cycle to monpazier. Caroline and Gareth always responded quickly to your emails and had loads of info on the area.

Disliked: Nothing
