  • Peaceful rural Périgord site 15 minutes' drive from Sarlat-la-Canéda
  • Château des Milandes and Lascaux caves half an hour's drive away
  • Outdoor pool on site, plus direct access to forest walking trails
If you’re heading to the Périgord region in the hope of seeing lots of gorgeous green scenery and a few historic buildings, and also sampling some of the food the area’s become well known for, you’ll probably be rather pleased with a stay at Camping Les Cimes du Périgord. You’ll be off to a good start with the fact that the views here are very green indeed, looking out over forest and farmland for a real sense of rural peace. You’ll also be able to wander directly out onto trails through that forest – one of them leads to the attractive 13th-century Château de Puymartin and its popular little restaurant (thus sorting out the historic building and the local cuisine in one place). Look out from this site and you’ll probably feel like you’re deep in the countryside – but in fact you’ll only be about 15 minutes’ drive from Sarlat-la-Canéda, which means lots more of those attractive old buildings and plenty of places to eat are within easy reach. Châteaux, caves and traditional villages are all close by too, and there are plenty of options for outdoor activities like canoeing, climbing or horse riding… whatever your tastes, you’re unlikely to get bored around here. Once you’re done with touring for the day, you’ll be able to come back to this quiet site for a dip in the outdoor pool (also with lovely views…), a game of pétanque or some time chilling out while the kids use the play area. There are plenty of practical facilities too, including a launderette, a bread delivery service and bathrooms with wheelchair-accessible facilities.

Local attractions

Sarlat-la-Canéda (15 minutes’ drive) is a good place to start – its medieval town centre is very well preserved, so it’s a lovely place to wander around, taking in ancient streets, squares and churches. Markets are in town on Wednesday morning and all day Saturday, but you’ll always be able to get a good feed in the local shops and restaurants. For other villages, places like a Roque-Gageac (20 minutes) and Domme (25 minutes) are worth visiting, as is the troglodyte village at Abri de la Madeleine (25 minutes). Rather grander are the châteaux of Beynac (15 minutes), Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (20 minutes) and Milandes (half an hour). To see some more countryside, there are lots of hikes nearby, or you could try canoeing on the Dordogne (20 minutes) or horse riding through the forest (15 minutes). Underground, check out caves like Grotte du Grand Roc (20 minutes) for stalactites and stalagmites, or Lascaux (half an hour) for ancient cave paintings.
