  • Leafy site in the Vézère Valley, family run for over 40 years
  • Close to the caves of Lascaux and Eyzies' National Prehistory Museum
  • Private fishing and swimming lake covering four hectares
In a prehistoric place with thoroughly modern facilities… if this is the sort of Dordogne holiday you dig, carve out some time for a stay at Camping Domaine du Lac. Niftily placed near the spectacular Lascaux and Maxange caves, and with not un but deux dinosaur parks within five kilometres, Domaine du Lac is in the prehistoric Vézère Valley between Les Eyzies and Montignac and within easy reach of Eyzies and its National Prehistory Museum. The site has been family run for over 40 years and covers eight scenic and green hectares. Its central feature is its excellent four-hectare lake, where guests can go swimming and fly fishing, or scramble on and off the big inflatables. Away from the lake, you could also dip in and out of the heated outdoor pool (with paddling pool alongside for tiddlers), or get stuck into some of the sporty options on offer such as volleyball, tennis and pétanque. There's a playground with bouncy castle for the kids, and a games room with table tennis, books, board games and a TV. The shops and restaurants of the handsome little village of Plazac are less than 20 minutes' walk away.

Local attractions

Time to go back in time… if your main aim with a stay here is to delve into the prehistoric history of these parts (jolly sensible), the main options to do so are the ancient caves all around, and the museums and dinosaur parks telling the story of this land throughout the ages. Cavewise, days' worth of subterranean trips are within 15 kilometres, including the must-see caverns of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lascaux, more prehistoric paintings at the Font-de-Gaume, prehistoric workshops at the Grotte du Roc de Cazelle. The spectacular stalactite display of the Grotte du Grand Roc are also within the same distance. Two dinosaur parks are within five kilometres of the site, including Le Conquil, an adventure park with tree climbing; about 20 minutes away, the Préhistoparc in Tursac recreates prehistoric scenes in a woodland setting. Eyzies village and its National Prehistory Museum is under half an hour's drive away. Other historical options through the ages are the medieval stronghold of the Fortress of Reignac, built into the cliff face (four kilometres); Château de Losse and its garden (six kilometres), the medieval city of Sarlat (28 kilometres) and the village and 12th-century abbey of Cadouin (35 kilometres). Canoeing and horse riding are four and six kilometres away, and an Accrobranche is within 15 kilometres. The Touron Animal Farm and Quercyland waterpark are both under 50 kilometres from the site.
