- Peaceful Dordogne family site with a river beach at Jumilhac-le-Grand
- Galerie de l’Or five minutes’ drive and Lac de Rouffiac 25 minutes
- Snack bar and grocery store; volleyball court and a games room with TV
When you’re in need of a chilled Dordogne hideaway with lots to keep the kids happy, Camping La Chatonnière on the outskirts of Jumilhac-le-Grand might well fit the bill. Set on a leafy seven-hectare park, this is a well-kept and neatly landscaped spot in the centre of Périgord forest and on the banks of the Isle river, where you can look forward to hearing birdsong and the murmur of the river while staying under the welcoming shade of trees.
Handy facilities on site include a grocery store selling local produce and breakfast pastries, a snack bar with all the ice cream kids need to see them though the day, and takeaway meals for quiet evenings with the family. Keep the young busy with board games from the library, and there are several playgrounds as well as a ping-pong table, beach volleyball court and a games room for teens with TV and table football.
You also have direct access to a private sandy beach on the Isle, and fishing is allowed on the river – please buy permits from reception. When you want to explore the Périgord Vert region, there are countless walks and hikes (good for exercising any dogs) or bike rides on forest trails from the pitches.
Jumilhac-le-Grand has lots of amenities too: food shops, several bars and restaurants, and a municipal swimming pool.

Local attractions
Heritage lovers can start at the medieval/Renaissance château in Jumilhac-le-Grand (five minutes’ drive), a stop on the Route of Richard the Lionheart tourist trail and open for guided tours (by candlelight on summer evenings) of its opulent apartments and terraced gardens. There’s also the notable Romanesque Church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens (also five minutes) to have a look at, with its faded frescoes, marble vaulting and ornate altar.
Keep the kids on their toes with local activities such as archery lessons at the Archers du Périgord Vert, gold panning at the Maison de l’Or en Limousin (15 minutes) and paddleboarding on Lac de Rouffiac (25 minutes). The braver among you can have a go at climbing sheer cliffs at La Forge du Boulou or Les Blocs du Diable (both about an hour).
Younger kids may prefer meeting the heavy horses and inquisitive goats at the Ferme Collective de la Tournerie (25 minutes), or following the treasure hunt to find hidden gold at the Galerie de l’Or (five minutes).
