- Family-friendly site just outside medieval Excideuil, in the Dordogne
- Périgord-Limousin Natural Regional Park half an hour’s drive
- Direct access to the river for swimming and fishing; pétanque court
Each of the four areas in the Périgord region of the Dordogne is named after a colour that is symbolic of its landscape; so you can be sure that when you visit the Périgord Vert (green), you’ll find yourself among forests of oaks and chestnut trees, and lush meadows.
When those rural settings call, what else can you do but answer by booking a spot at Camping du Périgord Vert, on the outskirts of the small medieval town of Excideuil (about one kilometre away; five minutes’ drive or a pleasant 15-minute walk along the D705 road).
Spacious pitches at this peaceful spot sit in the shade of leafy trees; a pétanque court awaits families eager to compete; and the river Loue flows right at the edge of the site, inviting anglers to cast a line, watersports enthusiasts to launch their canoe and wild swimmers to take a dip. And if you (or the kids) would feel safer swimming in a pool, the outdoor municipal pool is a 10-minute walk away, in Excideuil. The town also has several bakeries (mmm, buttery, flaky croissants for breakfast…), grocery shops and restaurants, plus a weekly market on Thursday mornings where you can stock up on delicious, sun-ripened locally grown produce.
The site owners will be happy to advise you on the best local trails, such as those lining the valleys and hills of the Périgord-Limousin Natural Regional Park (half an hour). For something a little different, head to Velorail Périgord Vert (15 minutes), where you’ll be cycling on a former railway line on a trolley-like vehicle.

Local attractions
Be sure to bring a warm jacket when you visit the Cave of Tourtoirac (15 minutes’ drive), where the temperature never rises higher than the mid-teens. Discovered (in rather tragic fashion) in the 1990s, this network of caverns and underground passages features spectacular rock formations.
The city of Périgueux (45 minutes) has a long history, having been a stronghold for the Gauls and the Romans, both of whom left plenty of traces. These include the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre, now housing a green park with a play area. The VESUNNA, Gallo-Roman Museum, in a contemporary building designed by architect Jean Nouvel, houses ancient artifacts.
High above the river Vézère, La Roque St. Christophe (55 minutes) is a limestone cliff carved with prehistoric dwellings. Take a tour around this vertiginous site (a film shows how the caves were built), then stay until after dark for the dramatic sound and light show.
