  • Well-equipped, tree-shaded site 100 metres from the Dordogne river
  • Domme village 10 minutes’ drive; Water Gardens of Carsac 15 minutes
  • Outdoor swimming pool, play area and games room; on-site food shop
A 10-minute drive from the hilltop medieval village of Domme (renowned for its far-reaching views over the Dordogne valley), leafy Camping Le Moulin de Caudon has a wealth of leisure facilities that should make it a fine pick for people who would rather not rely on the car when they’re on holiday. Heated outdoor swimming pool for summer-day dips? Check. A playground for the kids – and a games room for rainy days? A fitness room to keep on top of your cardio? Check, check and check again. And if that’s not enough, the Dordogne river is a short walk from the site (about 100 metres): there, you can have a picnic (the site owners will be happy to supply you with a packed lunch), swim and hire a canoe. Home to trout and salmon, the river is also a popular fishing destination – just make sure you get your hands on a permit before casting your line. You can also hire a set of wheels on site and set about discovering the local area, from the Marqueyssac Gardens to the castle at Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (both within about 50 minutes by bike). Back at the site, you can freshen up (there’s a shower and toilet block) before grabbing a bite to eat from the snack bar, which serves simple meals like burgers and pizzas (plus salads for the more health conscious), or lighting the barbecue provided. The on-site shop sells a range of basic groceries, alongside regional specialities and locally produced beers and wines; for anything else, there are supermarkets in Domme.

What customers say

This is a well-maintained, friendly campsite with a beautiful location near the Dordogne river. Guests praise the helpful owners, clean facilities including showers and toilets, and a lovely swimming pool. Pitches are generally spacious and offer shade. While many enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, some noted occasional dustiness on pitches and limited WiFi availability. A few also mentioned a lack of toilet roll and soap.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked Location, peacefulness, proximity to the river, the restaurant, the bar, the welcome, the views, the pool and the shady large pitches.

Disliked The pitch was dry with no grass, this meant the dust was hard to keep on top of and when it rained it turned to mud.

Take a large ground cover.

The facilities are good, cubicles are a little small, in August you will have to queue and wait for showers etc.

Because it was dusty the shower area was muddy.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked There is lots of shade from the mature trees on the site.
Well looked after by a family that work incredibly hard.
Quiet and relaxing.
A bar/restaurant but you need to order your food 2 hours before eating.
A well maintained swimming pool ideal for cooling down in the heat.
Lots for kids to do.
2 minutes walk from the Dordogne river.

Disliked The showers got very busy between 6 & 7pm, so just avoid those times.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked The site was in a very beautiful setting and well laid out with the showers, toilets and washing up all in the middle, which made it easy to get to from wherever your pitch is.

The pitches were great with plenty of mature trees to provide shade. The pool was also in a beautiful position with views across the fields and of the cliffs. It was a couple of minutes walk to the river for swimming, and this is what I think is extra special about this site.

It was calm and quiet at night time and the owners and staff were super-friendly and helpful. We had a really lovely family holiday here and would absolutely recommend staying here as a base to see Sarlat, Domme, the Lascaux caves and go kayaking on the river, which are all within easy reach from the site.

Liked We had a lovely private pitch under trees. Gorgeous location within a very short walk of the river. Friendly staff.

Disliked Our 20m electric lead still wasn’t long enough to reach the hook up point, however we were able to borrow an extension leaving a refundable deposit.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked A smaller site than we have stayed in previously, everything was kept clean and tidy. Peaceful and with lovely views and good access to the Dordogne. The sanitaires were clean and worked well. Lots of hot water for washing dishes etc and facilities for kids looked very good. Pizzas were very good!

Disliked The lighting in the Sanitaires seemed only to come on when it was quite dark. It was often quite dim in there at 0830 due to the way they are built. Perhaps they could be set to light a little earlier and later. Due to the very dry weather the site had lost a lot of grass and our pitch was quite bare. Not a lot can be done about it but it made our awning and caravan quite dusty and in need of a good clean.

Local attractions

There are several historic villages in the vicinity, from Domme itself to La Roque-Gageac (10 minutes’ drive), which clings to a limestone cliff overlooking the river. Also worthy of a visit is Sarlat-la-Canéda (15 minutes), with its half-timbered buildings, medieval cathedral and the unusual Lanternes des Morts structure. Spread over three hectares, the Water Gardens of Carsac (15 minutes) has a series of boardwalks snaking through its lotus ponds, cascades and streams, so you can see the aquatic plants at close range. Meanwhile, the kids might enjoy spotting frogs, feeding koi carps or (on a hot summer day) playing with the water jets. Get to know all about prehistoric art at the Lascaux International Center of Parietal Art (35 minutes), which houses accurate replicas of the paintings found in the famed cave discovered in 1940, as well as interactive displays.
