  • Peaceful campsite in the landscaped gardens of a Dordogne château
  • Périgueux half an hour’s drive and Sarlat-la-Canéda 50 minutes
  • Shaded pitches with a swimming pool; three-course meals available
Here’s a rare chance to camp up in the landscaped back garden of a two-hundred-year-old mansion… Château La Barge is a wonderfully romantic spot to linger, five minutes’ drive from the pretty village of Cubjac-Auvézère-Val d’Ans in the Dordogne countryside. This small and peaceful campsite has just a few pitches, all with electric hook-ups and all shaded by fruit and walnut trees, with modern amenities a short walk away up a flight of stone steps. There’s a swimming pool on site – great for cooling off on summer days – and you can also go wild swimming in the Auvézère River, just five minutes’ walk away. Deckchairs and tables are provided in the garden – pick up picnic ingredients from the shops in Rodas (five minutes’ drive). For those evenings when you don’t feel like cooking for yourselves, the site owners can organise a communal barbecue, or you can pre-order three-course fixed-price menus and eat alfresco under the covered pergola. All you need to do is turn up, enjoy a glass of wine and perhaps make new friends among your fellow campers as you dine.

Fully-serviced grass touring pitch

Liked: Very friendly hosts. Spotless facilities and fabulous hot showers. Lovely garden which our puppy enjoyed exploring on her lead. Hard standing spot which was great as it rained during our stay. We didn’t use the WiFi so can’t comment on that feature. Similarly, we were not travelling with children however there is a pool on site and the garden area is extensive.

Disliked: Nothing!

Local attractions

Château La Barge is set in hilly Dordogne countryside, a mecca for hikers and mountain bikers – in fact the Grande Randonnée 646 route between Perigueux and Sainte-Foy-la-Grande goes right past the grounds. You can also paddle down the Auvézère by canoe from Cubjac-Auvézère-Val d’Ans (five minutes’ drive). For more cultural pursuits, you have a choice of gorgeous and photogenic Dordogne towns and villages. Start your exploration of the area at the striking Byzantine cathedral in Périgueux (half an hour), or visit the troglodyte caves and Benedictine abbey in Brantome (45 minutes). Historic Sarlat-la-Canéda (50 minutes) has plenty of gourmet restaurants in its labyrinthine medieval centre, and there are lively produce markets there on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Step back in time to visit the magical reinterpretation of prehistoric paintings at Lascaux IV - International Centre of Cave Art (half an hour), or go deep underground and take a boat ride on the subterranean lake at Le Gouffre (90 minutes) near Padirac.
