  • Family-friendly Dordogne site five minutes’ drive from Brantôme
  • Château de Bourdeilles 10 minutes’ drive; Périgueux half an hour
  • Swimming pool and games on site; pizza restaurant and takeaway
With a lovely location within a loop on the Dronne river, Brantôme is often tipped as one of the top places to stay in the Dordogne region. But how about this instead? Camping Brantôme Far Ouest is five minutes’ drive away from the town, meaning that you can not only dip into the place they call the ‘Venice of the Périgord’ but also immerse yourselves in the gorgeous greenery of the Périgord countryside – a really lovely mix. This family-friendly site has a peaceful and relaxed vibe, but there’s also plenty to keep you busy should you fancy a bit of activity. For starters, there’s an open-air pool where you can either swim or chill out on the sun deck, and you can also play games of table tennis, table football and pétanque. You may fancy trying your hand at archery lessons too, or just have a kickabout over on the sports field. Heading out and about, you could get out for walks and bike rides in the lovely surroundings, go kayaking along the Dronne or find little river beaches for a spot of wild swimming. You’ll want to spend some time bimbling around Brantôme too, of course, and perhaps checking out places like Périgueux and Angoulême (both within an hour’s drive). Back on site, you can cook your meals at the large communal barbecue area (pick up supplies in Brantôme) or pick up pizzas (eat in or takeaway) at the restaurant. In the summer holidays, there’s regular entertainment too, with themed evenings, music nights and karaoke sessions all on the agenda.

Local attractions

Brantôme (five minutes’ drive) is one of the jewels of the Dordogne region, so you’ll certainly want to spend some time exploring the town, visiting the riverside medieval abbey and the troglodyte caves of Le Bimbillou Parc before strolling through Les Jardins Tranquilles or hiring canoes/kayaks to paddle along the river. Time your trip for a Friday and you can also explore the market. Getting more of a flavour for the area’s past might take you to places like the eclectic Château de Bourdeilles (10 minutes), the neolithic burial chamber at Dolmen de Peyrelevad (10 minutes) and the pretty village of Saint-Jean-de-Côle (20 minutes). You could also spend some time exploring the old town and sampling the food in Périgueux (half an hour) or taking in all the art in Angoulême (an hour). Meanwhile, for more activity, there are adventure sports at Vergtaventures (half an hour), watersports at Grand Étang de Saint Estèphe (half an hour) and rail bike rides at Velorail Perigord Vert (35 minutes).
