  • A 10-minute walk from Bergerac's attractions and amenities
  • Fishing, pétanque, playground and bakery on site
Doing the Dordogne? Bag a break at peaceful Camping La Pelouse for a bargain Bergerac base. This splendid spot is in woods on the banks of the Dordogne river, in a convenient location for the town’s amenities (shops, restaurants and an excellent Saturday market among them) and attractions – it’s easy to abandon the car here and head out on foot or bikes to see the half-timbered houses of the historic centre. A short stroll also leads to boarding points for trips on traditional gabarre boats, and trails seeking out the Cyrano de Bergerac statues scattered around the town. Bergerac’s rightly famed as a wine destination too – keen tipplers can learn about their drinks at the wine museum, and take tutored tastings (most handy that you can walk home from these). There's no shame however in skipping straight to the sipping; there are plenty of vineyards and wineries within a half-hour drive that will welcome guests in for a tour and to pick up bottles. Back at the site, there’s plenty of space to chill out, with direct access to the river for fishing or waterside wine quaffing. You may also like to take your glass over to the pétanque court (it helps relax the bowling arm… perhaps) or to the playground while you supervise the small sorts. Shops for snacks to accompany your drinks are easily reachable in town, but you can save yourself an early-morning outing by ordering breakfast bits from the bakery on site.

Electric optional grass and earth tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Position of site near town. Friendly warden.

Disliked: Appalling toilet facilities. They are so old and badly maintained that they are impossible for the wardens to keep clean. A new block is desperately needed. Better water points also needed.

Electric optional grass and earth tent pitch (two person)

Liked: Very nice proprietors. Excellent tree cover throughout. Mainly campervan but tent area too. Clean facilities.5 minutes walk to bar and simple traditional Portuguese restaurant and chique craft beer bar and upmarket restaurant. Cross bridge to town 15 minutes to good centre with cinema.

Disliked: To be honest there were some appallingly behaved campers but the proprietors evicted them.

Electric optional grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: A very well situated site as it is only a 10/15 minute walk into the town and what a beautiful town it is. Well worth visiting. I would say however, don't forget to take your toilet paper to the bog! The facilities are a little basic but functional. Owners are very helpful, just don't rock up between 13:00 and 15:30. Long lunches. If you need reasonable wifi, make sure you pick a spot that's more or less in front of the reception. Pizza van arrived on one of the nights. Great pizzas at a good price.

Disliked: Poor wifi beyond the reception area.

Local attractions

Begin your Bergerac break with a trip to the town museum, which houses a collection of wine exhibits. If drinking’s not your only vice, stop by at the Tobacco Museum for an insight into the history of smoking as well. For more wholesome outings, take a trip along the Dordogne on a traditional gabare from the town pier or take a 15-minute drive to hire canoes and power your own paddling. There’s plenty of wine to sip in town, but it’s also worth spending some time taking tours of some of the area’s top wineries – the excellent Château de Monbazillac (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to start. Those with nippers who aren’t yet of drinking age may instead like to do their castle visits at Château de Lanquais (25 minutes) or Château de Lauzun (35 minutes). Other wine-free days out locally include coming eye to eye with the biggest snake in Europe (a hefty 130 kilograms of serpent, no less) at Zoo de Mescoules (20 minutes) and moseying around the ancient mosaics at Montcaret archaeological site (40 minutes).
