  • Barrage de Tuilières dam and Monbazillac both 35 minutes by bike
  • Shop selling organic fruit and vegetables; shared outdoor kitchen
Keen to do your bit for the environment? Combine your green credentials with a trip to the Dordogne by booking in at Camping Perma-Pirate, 10 minutes by bike from the centre of historic Bergerac, where pitches are set among the leafy fruit orchards and veg patches of a small, family eco-farm edging Pécharmant Vineyard. Simple site facilities include dry toilets, hot showers and access to the communal outdoor kitchen and barbecue. The shop sells fresh organic produce grown on the farm, and you can buy food with either money or tokens earned for ‘good actions’ like litter picking and helping harvest the bounty. If you want to know more about this biodiversity project, you’re welcome to chat to the resident gardeners and eco-builders, who can take you on guided walks around the farm. Mini-training courses are held in various aspects of permaculture – along with outdoor activities for kids – so that you can all be on holiday and learn something new at the same time; a win-win situation for everybody.

Local attractions

Discover the shady banks of the Dordogne River on a family cycle ride along the traffic-free Bergerac V91 Greenway (five minutes by bike), which passes Creysse (20 minutes, hire kayaks here to paddle down the river) and pretty, pastel-coloured Mouleydier (half an hour) on its way to the Barrage de Tuilières (35 minutes), where there’s a fish ladder and small museum tracing the construction of the hydroelectric dam. Content to stay closer to home base? Have a wander around the half-timbered houses and cobbled alleyways of Bergerac Old Town (10 minutes), see the troglodyte caves below landmark Château de Commarque, and celebrate the region’s long winemaking heritage with tastings at the Maison des Vins, which is prettily housed in the 17th-century Cloitre des Recollets. If you have developed a taste for Bergerac wines, discover the sweet white wines produced around Monbazillac (35 minutes) at the village’s namesake Renaissance château. Here you can tour opulent period interiors as well as sampling fine vintages and buying bottles from the shop as souvenirs of your Dordogne adventures.
