  • Family-orientated site in the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park
  • Brantôme 25 minutes’ drive; Angoulême an hour
  • Swimming pool, sauna, playground, fishing pond, restaurant and bar
In the Périgord-Limousin Natural Regional Park, Camping La Ripole is the place for anyone who’s after a relaxing holiday – with a twist of forest bathing and a large helping of gastronomic delights. With more than 10 acres of wooded grounds, this peaceful site sits a five-minute drive from the village of Abjat-sur-Bandiat, in the northern reaches of the Dordogne. While the tall trees provide ample shade, when the summer temperatures really kick in, you should be able to find additional freshness in the pool (lined with sun loungers for those who want to top up their tan) or by the greenery-fringed lake (if you intend to do some fishing here, you’ll need a licence). If, on the other hand, you want to crank the heat up a notch, you can take refuge in the sauna. Parents can get some ‘me/us’ time sipping a glass of wine at the bar, confident that the kids are busy making friends with other young guests in the play area, climbing trees or taking part in organised activities such as tug-of-war and pétanque tournaments. La Ripole also arranges canoe outings (from Brantôme, 25 minutes’ drive), plus hiking trips and mountain-bike excursions. If you want to explore the Périgord-Limousin independently, there's no shortage of destinations – from the woods at Le Trou de Philippou to the waterfalls at Saut du Chalard (both 10 minutes). Back at the site (maybe with your stomach rumbling), you can fire up the barbecue or take the path of least resistance and hit the restaurant, which serves seasonal local specialities, as well as themed meals (like fried mussels on Wednesdays).

Electric grass pitch

Liked: What a wonderful campsite! As a wildlife-lover it was particularly ideal for me. Large pitch, free electric on pitch, clean facilities, swimming pool that wasn’t too busy, bar, fishing lake, friendly owners. I can’t recommend this very quiet campsite enough!

Disliked: Walk to nearest town approx 40 minutes away which my husband wasn’t so happy with as he fancied us going for a meal, but too far after a long drive. No on-site shop - would be really helpful if you could just buy some basics such as milk, bread and toilet roll. No toilet roll in toilets!

Local attractions

With its historic centre surrounded by the river Dronne, Brantôme is known for an 11th-century waterfront abbey, whose limestone caves preserve bas-reliefs carved into the rock by early monks. There are more troglodyte structures at Le Bimbillou Parc, where you can also see elegant, wisteria-covered arches and an old mill. A stop on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route, Périgueux (55 minutes’ drive) is dominated by a distinctive cathedral with multiple domes. The Vesunna Gallo-Roman Museum has been built around the remains of an ancient villa with colourful murals, and it also displays artefacts unearthed in the area. Exhibits at the Musée de la Bande Dessinée at Angoulême (an hour) include original drawings for comics strips by Francophone authors like Hergé (of Tintin fame). After exploring this collection, step outside and take a selfie with the statue of comic book character Corto Maltese, on a pedestrian bridge crossing the river Charente.
