General

  • Riverside site two kilometres from the town centre of Colmar
  • 5km from forest horse rides and 6 from a watersports centre
  • Big heated pool, paddling pool, snack bar and spectacular surroundings

It's a mere two kilometres from Camping de l'Ill to the comely Haut-Rhin town of Colmar, the biggest in the Alsace region and niftily set on the Alsace wine route. You can bike from here to town via a peaceful local path and the cycle hire handily available on site – do, however, take care riding back if you've headed into town intent on fully investigating Alsatian wine.

Lazy riverside and countryside days – also avec wine, should you so wish – are yours for the taking right on site too, as Camping de l’Ill is on the banks of a small river and home to gorgeous greenery and spectacular views. If you do feel you should explore beyond Colmar/ the site grounds/ the local wine, it's a drive of 20 kilometres from here to Germany (the site's river of Ille is a tributary of the Rhine), and you can also venture out for days of heady hikes among the Jura and Vosges mountains and the beaut landscapes of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Park. A tad confuddled on what to tackle first? Leaf through the extensive info at the site tourist point to figure out where you'd like your Alsace adventure to begin.

Quite frankly you'll probably want to spend a significant amount of time just lounging around on your own secluded spot on site (do see the pics to view how handsome it all is), but if 'Just sit quietly and read your book' is guaranteed to make the kids a tad restless, leisurely options are to hand for all ages too.

Clamouring kids will probably demand a visit to the pool area first – and how wise they'd be, as it comes with a separate pool, with water toys, all of their very own, alongside the main site pool for the grownups. If they've never tried pétanque before, take them along afterwards to give it a go, or let them conquer you/ learn the art of graceful losing (delete as appropriate) at the football and ping pong tables. You might have to let them win at this last one, as it's likely you'll be too ready to soak up the views and peaceful vibe from here: again, do click on the pics to see how handsome it all is.

A snack bar and small shop are open during the summer season to assist in fuelling you all up for all this, and bread and croissants can be ordered on site and are delivered freshly baked in the morning. There's free wifi available at reception too, if you want to do a little more digging into what's around this splendid part of  north-eastern France.

Good location to the town, we stayed thier from Calais en rote to Lake Garda. Good clean pool and facilities. Friendly staff. Pitches are in the smaller side for France but fine really.

    Disliked:

Can be tight to manoeuvre onto some pitches with a larger unit (7.3m) and couldn’t have done it without the mover. Site entrance comes up quick so look out or you’ll go straight passed

    Disliked:

pitch up pitches seemed to be on the HARD SHOULDER next to the roadway into the main site with concrete and gravel bases.
I complained that it might be noisy having vehicles coming and going all day, dusty, and with fumes from vehicles also our vehicle would jut out onto the path as we had bikes on the back.
reception staff member found us a much more suitable pitch away from traffic.
to be honest I am surprised that these hard shoulder "Pitches" are used other than one night stops!

also I really do think that the facilities where we were then pitched, need dramatic up-dates. They were fairly clean but very old. only two toilets and three showers for a very full camp site. There were other facilities but quite a distance away. The cost to stay is not cheap by any means.

An older couple near us were asked to move pitches mid afternoon because they had mistaken the leaving date on their pitch. They had to pack up everything at a moments notice and not surprisingly left the site. The staff intimated that the pitch was booked by another vehicle, actually that vehicle only stayed one night so the older couple could have just paid up and stayed with the other vehicle pitching where they had parked originally... jobs worth..

Quiet and basic campsite with very clean facilities and lovely views 23/06/2018

The campsite was super quiet and had a very relaxed feel with lots of beautiful trees providing plenty of shade for our little boy. We camped up by the river so the view from the tent was fantastic. Lots of space to put our tent up with our car just next to it and the facilities were very clean with soap and plenty of toilet paper in the toilets. To get to Colmar from the campsite is very easy as the bus stop is just outside the campsite and serviced by multiple routes which take approx 15 minutes to get to Colmar city centre.

    Disliked:

The restaurant was closed despite the campsite being fairly busy and the campsite shop stock was very minimal so make sure to visit the huge L'Eclerc that's 10 minutes walk. Main downside for us was the fact that you could hear the busy road especially in the evenings but not as much as you'd expect being so close to it. The swimming pool is quite small but as it wasn't very busy there most of the time it didn't really matter too much

    Disliked:

The queuing system to get into the campsite.
As everyone parked in front of the barrier to pay and get their gate code, some were longer than others,! Not very organised as no one could get in.
    No restaurant open.
Internet only available in the free / common room.
    Walk into Colmar 30 mins.
1 shower block really old , like public toilet.
New one, modern but very busy.
Rained very heavy made 2 toilet block a swamp

Local attractions

The crackingly scenic town of Colmar is stuffed with sights to see: wander around the Maison des Têtes and the mansion of Maison Pfister, the Maison Zum Kragen and the Quai de la Poissonnerie, or around the Kruteneau market garden district in the south of Colmar known as Little Venice.

For history, try the Unterlinden Museum, the Bartholdi Museum, the toy museum and the natural history and ethnography museum, all excellent places to potter around. Colmar also reckons it's the capital of the Alsace wine region, so is def the Haut-Rhin place to bag some Alsatian wine or to set out on the surrounding wine route.

If you're after active adventures, a canoeing and kayaking club is a kilometre away along the river, or canters on horseback can be had among the trees of Neuland forest, about five kilometres away. The Colmar-Houssen watersports centre is under 15 minutes' drive away.

Have an adrenalised day trip 50 minutes' drive from the site at Breitenbach's Parc Alsace Aventure, where there are treetop trails to weave around, along with a heady range of other adventures including paintball and archery.
