General
- Family-friendly site on the Danish island of Rømø
- A 10-minute drive from northern Europe’s widest sandy beach
- Less than an hour and a half’s drive from Legoland Billund
Be sure to pack your bucket, spade and swimming cossie for your hols at Kommandørgården. At the family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from Havenby, the main town on Rømø island in the Tønder region of Denmark, you’re definitely going to get sandy.
On the edge of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Wadden Sea (which isn’t really a sea), Kommandørgården is a top spot for beachy getaways. Along the west coast of Rømø, where the island meets the North Sea (which really is a sea), lies northern Europe’s widest sandy beach. It’s 12 kilometres from end to end, and can be up to three kilometres from surf to dunes at low tide.
Make your way to this beach, 10 minutes from the site, for swimming, surfing, sailing and windsurfing (and head straight there after a flood for amber hunting), but get to know its length too – the kitebuggies at the southern end are all fun and games, but you might want to avoid wandering onto one of the nudist stretches unawares…
When you tire of the seaside, swim back to the site for a dip in the outdoor pool or to let the kids run riot on the two large playgrounds, before wandering over to the service building to fire up the barbecue and chow down on your goodies next to the bonfire while looking over the Wadden Sea.
Want to take a break from doing all the cooking? There are tons of restaurants to try within 10 minutes of Kommandørgården, so be sure to nab a spot at one of those.

Local attractions
There’s more to Rømø than sandy beaches and UNESCO sites that are lying about being seas. Your first stop should be Rømø Lege- og Hesteland, less than five minutes’ drive from Kommandørgården, where the kids can swarm over pirate ships, shoot down water slides, pilot remote-controlled boats and ride horses and donkeys. If that doesn’t get them lost in the holiday spirit, try Rømø Lege- og Labyrintpark where they can get truly lost.
Rømø has a rich history of whaling captains and commanders (a history that inspired the site name) so, to get a feel for it, poke around the Kommandørgård Museum to learn more about these seafarers, visit Toftum school – the oldest and smallest school in Denmark, where the teachers were always retired captains and commanders – and call to St Clemens church, which is devoted to sailors.
The rides, animals and models of Legoland Billund are just under an hour and a half away if the kids are getting bored (or if you are) or, for a castle made of real-life bricks, try the stunning Schakenborg, 45 minutes from Kommandørgården.
