  • Lakeside park less than 20 minutes’ walk from Marielyst beach
  • A 10-minute walk to Marielyst town and 20 mins’ drive to Gedser Odde
  • Waterpark, play area and barbecues; shops within a 10-minute walk
An award-winning beach less than a 20-minute walk, a splashy waterpark on site and lush lakes to settle besides… take a look at the pics and you might be urged to say ‘hej’ to Marielyst Familiecamping on Denmark’s Falster island rather sharpish. This well-equipped spot in the Zealand resort town of Marielyst is close to a 20-kilometre-long beach the owners describe as the ‘best on the Baltic coast’ (and has indeed bagged a bevvy of prizes to back up the claim). It’s a sandy stretch with white dunes for hide and seek, calm waters for wallowing in and a levee with a trail to bike or walk along. More dunking can be done back on site at the pools and on the slides; a playground is also to hand for days when the small sorts would rather stay feeling dry and hygge... If kids are nagging for nosh after a dip, spark up the barbecue (available on site) or meander into Marielyst – restaurants and shops are 10 minutes away on foot, including a farm store for picking up locally grown, organic produce. And if they’re nagging for stuff to do? A go-kart and paintballing centre is within a 10-minute walk as well – and with the lure of such thrills, you might even get away with hauling them off to historical places like Middelaldercentret, 20 minutes’ drive away, a living history museum that gives visitors a glimpse of what life in Denmark’s days of yore was like in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. They might baulk a little more at a suggestion of a trip to the splendid Fuglsang Art Museum (25 minutes’ drive), although adults should stick it on the itinerary for sure.

Local attractions

If some extra culture is wanted, the neoclassical Corselitze manor house is a 20-minute drive from the site for strolls around a partly preserved English-style landscape garden with orchards and a nursery; travel 10 minutes further to the fishing village of Hesnæs to see its reed-covered houses. Half an hour south east is Aalholm Castle, one of the few medieval fortified structures still standing in Denmark and the oldest on Lolland. Also on this island is Knuthenborg Safaripark (a 40-minute drive), the biggest in northern Europe, for sighting exotic critters like giraffes and tigers roaming across the grounds. Back on Falster you can make a beeline 20 minutes away from Marielyst Familiecamping to Denmark’s most southern point, Gedser Odde, for indigenous animals instead like the seals and cormorants that can sometimes be spotted in this landscape of chalky white cliffs.
