  • Quiet North Jutland site five minutes' drive from Skørping
  • Mountain biking, hiking, fishing, canoeing and lake swimming nearby
  • Direct access to Rebild Bakker National Park and Rold Forest
You might not immediately think 'safari' when you ponder upon a holiday in pretty and peaceful Denmark, but you really, certainly and absolutely should. Intrepid adventurers should trek along to North Jutland's Safari Camping to hone their outdoors skills: its lush locale on Denmark's Himmerland peninsula is a few minutes' walk from both the Rebild National Park and the Rold Forest, and mountain bike and hiking trails around both start directly from the site. Both woodland and national park are top picks for holidaymakers in Denmark, who trot along here for wanders in the country's biggest forest, as well as wildlife watching and hill hiking in the national park. (And for Americanised activities: the Rebild National Park was founded by a Danish-American way back in the 19th century, and these days is the site of the biggest Fourth of July celebrations in the world outside the United States. Yeehaw.) Quiet and family-friendly Safari Camping is a few kilometres from the town of Skørping, in the middle of Rold Forest and three kilometres from the Thingbæk limestone mines. Leisure facilities include a multisports field and a miniature golf course for family challenges, or you could let the kids roam and swing around at the playground while you laze about on the grass nearby. There's a food shop for supplies and gas cylinders: most excellently for such an intrepid adventuring site, barbecues and campfires are both allowed for wilderness explorers.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The pitches were nice but windy. Friendly owner and cozy reception with wine theme. Family bathrooms is practical

Disliked: The electricity was unstable, even though we used only max 12 of the 16 ordered amps. The bathrooms had many quirks. A danish 5-crown gives you four minutes of hot water, but it took 90 seconds to adjust the hotwater. A sink might be abandoned in one of the family rooms, replaced by another smaller but working sink.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Plek mochten we zelf uitkiezen. En lekker goedkoop.

Disliked: Douches en toiletten zeer verouderd of half kapot. Niet echt uitnodigd om te douchen. Een nacht was goed maar zou er niet langer blijven.

Local attractions

Hiking and cycling are popular in both the Rebild Bakker National Park and the Rold Forest, as are swimming and fishing in the forest's lakes, brooks and springs. For a Danish adventure of an unexpected flavour, make your way deep into the forest to visit the replica of Abraham Lincoln's log cabin home, or hang around the region at the start of July to take part in the Fourth of July celebrations as part of a weekend festival welcoming Danish-Americans to their homeland. A few kilometres away, the former Thingbæk limestone mines are now home to underground exhibitions. In the south-eastern stretch of Rold Forest is the lake of Madum, the Himmerland peninsula's largest lake covering 204 hectares of clear water and surrounded by a sandy beach. The lake is a famed birdwatching spot and an international protected area for birds too: expect to spy swans, coots and grebes, as well as ospreys diving into the water to snatch a specimen or two from the lake's many pike and perch.
