  • Quiet family-run site on a peninsula surrounded by the Trnavka River
  • A five-minute drive to Želiv; an hour to central Prague
  • Pool and playground on site; lake for swimming, boating and fishing
As relaxing rural breaks go, you’re unlikely to find many better spots than one on a peninsula, almost entirely surrounded by water. That’s the position of The Hideaway, a quiet retreat with views out over the Trnavka River from almost every angle. On top of being pretty, this location is also a great one for alfresco activities – you can swim in the lake, take to the river for carp fishing or boating, or stride out along one of the nearby walking trails. Bikes and a small rowing boat are available to hire on site to help with your days of exploring. This is a place where you can mix up outdoor time with visits to historic sights too: nearby Želiv (five minutes’ drive away) is famed for its monastery, and the site is also within easy reach of both Prague and Brno for day trips. If you need a hand with planning or deciding where to go, site staff are happy to help out with all the relevant information. Around the site are plenty of chillout areas where you can soak up views and the quiet forest atmosphere while relaxing in hammocks or swing chairs – there’s also a play area where the kids can let off steam, and a 3.6-metre inflatable pool that’s just the thing for cooling off in summer. In the evening, guests gather around the outdoor barbecues and campfires, or head into the large indoor barbecue/party room for a bit of jolly socialising. Whichever one you’re heading for, pick up supplies at the site shop (which has soft drinks and Czech beers along with basic groceries) or walk to a nearby supermarket.

Local attractions

If you only manage one historic sight visit around here, make it the Želiv Monastery (five minutes’ drive). Tours run most days in high season, and once you’ve explored the attractive buildings you can either sign up for a tour and tastings at the monastery’s brewery or dine at the restaurant. A little further away (an hour’s drive) but worth the trip is the city of Prague, known as the ‘city of a hundred spires’ for its tower-filled skyline (although it’s estimated there are actually between 500 and 1000…) You could easily spend a full day wandering the city’s medieval streets, visiting the astronomical clock and seeing the cathedral. Hot day? Take the half-hour drive to Vodní Ráj waterpark in Jihlava – there are several outdoor pools to splash around in, plus slides for the kids to zoom down and space for games of beach volleyball. This is also the place to come for a bit of pampering in the spa and sauna or dips in the indoor pools.
