  • Family-friendly site in the Divoká Šárka nature area west of Prague
  • Prague centre 20 minutes’ drive; Chrustenice Mine 25 minutes
  • Swimming in the nearby Džbán lake; easy access to Divoká Šárka trails
Where can you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by forested peaks and meadowlands, but still be within 20 minutes’ drive of the bustling centre of a European capital? That would be in Divoká Šárka, to the west of Prague. And within this area of untamed nature (Divoká means ‘wild’) is Camping Džbán. This peaceful site is just the spot for those who want to keep one foot in nature and the other close to the sightseeing and cultural activities of a large city. There’s plenty to do on site: from swimming and fishing in the Džbán reservoir (right next to the site), to epic hikes or bike rides along the marked trails in Divoká Šárka. Start easy – perhaps with the four-kilometre loop that follows the course of the Šárecký stream past the gorge – before graduating to more challenging routes. If you’re into watersports, you might want to have a go at wakeboarding at Wake Park Džbán, a 20-minute walk away, on the southern shore of the reservoir. Those with kids in tow can head to DinoLive (next door), with life-size tyrannosaurus, stegosaurus and other prehistoric beasties. The site has a toilet/shower block with facilities for disabled guests, a washing-up area, a launderette and a baby-changing room. There’s also a communal fridge freezer where you can store your barbecue essentials (barbecues are provided, by the way) – though you might just prefer to take advantage of Prague’s wealth of restaurants and bars.

Local attractions

As you approach Prague (20 minutes’ drive), stay on the western bank of the Vltava to visit the castle complex and the Franz Kafka Museum. Cross the river on the Charles Bridge to reach the Old Town, with the multi-spired turrets of the Church of Our Lady before Týn, and the astronomical tower of the Klementinum. On the far side of the airport, ArcadeHry.cz Arena (20 minutes) is a retro gaming museum where you can introduce the kids to vintage arcade games such as Space Invaders, Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. From there, head into Červený Újezd Castle, a 21st-century structure housing a museum of agricultural life. Don a hard hat and head down the shaft at Chrustenice Mine (25 minutes), where you can ride an underground trolley and watch as entertaining guides demonstrate old mining equipment. For more mining history, continue to the Mine and Industrial Railway Museum (half an hour), in the nearby Solvay Quarries, with open-air displays.
