Krk – newcomers may find the name a bit of a mouthful, but what this island lacks in vowels it makes up for in scenic surrounds. If your sights are set on a park with Adriatic views, family-friendly facilities and easy coastal access, Camp Omišalj in the north-western corner of the island could be the one for you.  This site is well-placed for beachside Croatian breaks: both the road bridge that connects Krk to the mainland and the pleasure ports and seafood restaurants of Omišalj harbour can be reached in 10 minutes or less by car. Guests who fancy island-hopping hols can drive 20 minutes down to the ferry at Valbiska and sail over to nearby Cres, too.   Visitors also have scope to give the driving a break here, though, thanks to direct access to a deep blue cove (a popular spot for saltwater swims) and on-site leisure facilities like a large outdoor pool, sports pitches and bike hire.  Foodwise, head to the park's poolside restaurant for traditional Mediterranean dishes and tasty local wines. There are also two bars on hand serving refreshing drinks (including cocktails) throughout the day. Outdoor eats are also an option: set up a barbecue or head to the well-stocked grocery shop if you fancy rustling up something good. There's also a handy supermarket a five-minute drive away.

Local attractions

If you've come for maximum beach time, your best bet is to stick on the island. For a pebble beach close to a fishing town, grab your towel and head to Malinska (15 minutes' drive) or Punat (30 minutes). Sandier beaches can also be found, including Oprna Bay (35 minutes) and Stara Baška (40 minutes). While on the island, make sure to drop by the town of Krk (30 minutes), a walled city with terracotta roofs, ancient stone walls and beachfront promenades.  Over on the mainland, top attractions include Rijeka (25 minutes), the third largest city in Croatia. Big tourist groups tend to give this spot a miss and head to Split or Dubrovnik instead, so sites like the castle, clock tower and covered market should be on the quieter side.  Jaunts to other islands can also be sorted if you fancy more offshore adventure. Head to Valbiska ferry port (20 minutes) if you're tempted by Cres, a craggy, sparsely populated spot (crossing time 25 minutes). For trips to Rab and its landscape of forests, beaches and olive groves, catch the ferry at Krk (30 minutes' drive, then a 30-minute crossing).
