For that winning combination, head to this holiday park on the Istrian peninsula, where direct access to the coast and well-maintained amenities bode very well indeed for relaxed family trips. SunLodge at Camping Bijela Uvala is a friendly Croatian holiday park 10 minutes' drive south of the coastal town of Poreč. Fans of sports and games will certainly get good value for money here, as the park has an array of on-site activities: an outdoor pool, trampolines, tennis courts, beach volleyball and miniature golf are all on the cards, as is horse riding if you're interested in spending some time in the saddle. The self-contained static caravan accommodation has ample indoor and outdoor space for eating and drinking, but Camping Bijela Uvala also has several restaurants, making it easy to mix it up – when you're in the mood for familiar flavours, a pizzeria should sort you out, while more traditional local dishes are also available when you're after a taste of Istrian cuisine. The site is sandwiched between two seaside resorts: Funtana (five minutes' drive) has a pleasure port, opportunities to hire jetskis and beachfront bars, while the slightly larger town of Poreč (10 minutes) is where to head for traditional narrow streets and historic buildings.

Local attractions

Poreč's sleepy old town (10 minutes' drive) is well worth visiting for its restaurants, bars and Mediterranean vibes. It's also home to ancient history in the form of the Euphrasian Basilica, a World Heritage Site with roots that go back as far as the 6th century. The town also has attractions to keep the kids entertained, including an aquarium and, just out of town, Aquacolors waterpark (five minutes from base). Slightly further afield, the Istrian peninsula is brimming with things to see and do. Pula (45 minutes), for instance, has a well-preserved Roman amphitheatre and attractive Venetian fortress, while the eastern and central parts of the peninsula around the town of Pazin (30 minutes) is home to a number of waterfalls. Funtana also has potential for cross-border road trips up through Slovenia (40 minutes) to the mountains or over to Trieste (an hour and 10 minutes), an Italian port with a rich and storied history. Visits to other Croatian islands are up for grabs too: the Brijuni Islands, a national park, can be admired on cruises starting in Pula or Poreč, while driving over to Cres via the ferry takes roughly an hour and a half.
