- Wild camping among Mediterranean vegetation on the island of Ugljan
- Preko, Plodine and Kali five minutes’ drive; Zadar 35 minutes
- Dogs welcome; nearby walks; bike hire; secluded pitches
Ready for a digital detox? If you are longing to embrace your inner Robinson Crusoe and a simpler, no-frills lifestyle (and blissful silence…), Camping Preko should be right at the top of your accommodation shortlist. This back-to-basics site is in the middle of the Croatian island of Ugljan, opposite the city of Zadar (35 minutes’ drive), in the Adriatic Sea.
Set up on the forest floor, amid fragrant Mediterranean vegetation. It might be worth noting that the site also welcomes naturists; having said that, the pitches are pretty secluded and sheltered by dense shrubs, so chances are you will never see nor hear your neighbours.
Bear in mind that there is no water on site (and that’s no hot water, no running water, no drinking water), so come prepared if you can by stopping at any of the supermarkets in the coastal towns of Preko, Plodine or Kali (all of them five minutes’ drive), where there are also plenty of dining options.
The island has a vast network of hiking trails that you might like to explore with your four-legged companion (a welcome guest here). Alternatively, hire a bike on site and cycle through olive groves and up pine-covered hills to places such as the ruined fortress of St Michael (Tvrđava Sveti Mihovil on local maps), on the west coast of Ugljan, from where you can admire the islands of Kornati National Park.

Local attractions
There are several spectacular beaches on the island, and one of them is pebbly Mala Lamjana (five minutes’ drive), at the very tip of the deep bay of the same name. Its shallow waters are great for kids, who can also look for marine life in the rockpools or explore the nearby playground.
In the days of Ancient Rome, the oil mill in Muline (15 minutes), at the northern end of the island, was Croatia’s largest production site of olive oil, with five large presses filling more than 3,000 amphorae that were then exported throughout the empire. In addition to the ancient ruins, you can check out a replica of the mill.
Take a ferry to the mainland and visit Zadar (35 minutes). Built in the ninth century, the (now deconsecrated) Church of St. Donatus has a dramatic stone interior with remarkable acoustics and it hosts music concerts. By sunset, be sure to find your way to the Sea Organ, the pipes of which are played by the waves, for a spectacle of music and light.
