  • Naturist-friendly site with Adriatic Sea views on traffic-free Biševo
  • Mezuporat an hour’s walk for boat trips to the Blue Cave
  • Up-cycled eco-lodges five minutes’ walk from the campsite restaurant
You have to be pretty organised to stay at Island Escape on Biševo, but once you’re there, the place is absolutely worth the effort. For starters, this tiny Adriatic island has no shops and no running water, so you’ll need to bring supplies in with you. Secondly, there’s only one ferry a day from Komiža on Vis, and thirdly, even to get to Vis you’ll need a ferry from Split on the Croatian mainland. And now the pluses of staying at this peaceful spot: only a handful of people live permanently on Biševo, and there’s no traffic, so all you hear is the rustle of pine trees. Quiet Salbunara Bay is a short walk away, where you can eat breakfast and dinner on the roof of the campsite’s restaurant and swim in gentle waves. Constructed with up-cycled materials using a blend of eco-technology and old local knowledge, the site’s handful of stone-and-wood-built cottages sit on tree-shaded terraces in an ancient former vineyard. Surrounded by rosemary bushes, each has spectacular Adriatic views (you can expect colourful sunsets too). Simple furnishings include ergonomic beds, pillows, blankets and mosquito nets, a storage area made with recycled wood, seating and hammocks for chilling in the small private gardens. Camping freezers keep drinks and snacks cool, and steps away from the lodges are basic outdoor shower facilities – water comes from the cistern in the main house.

Route directions

If you are travelling by car, you will need to leave it in Split as no cars are allowed on the island. From Split, take the ferry to Vis, where you can take a bus from the pier to Komiža, then either take a speedboat or take the local line (Sveti Salvestar) to Biševo and get off at the second stop (Salbunara Bay).

Local attractions

Considering Biševo is only around four miles long, it packs a surprisingly big punch when it comes to things to see and do. The island’s famed Blue Cave is only accessible by sea, so join a boat trip from Mezuporat (an hour’s walk) to enter the cavern filled with water glowing an eerie deep blue as the sunlight filters in. When a leisurely day on the beach is calling, Salbunara Bay (five minutes) is a tiny and sheltered cove backed by pine trees and has safe bathing for families. Quiet sandy Porat (35 minutes) offers up a couple of relaxed restaurants serving seafood, and in the next bay south, Boštra (40 minutes) is a minuscule pebble beach with pristine water surrounded by cliffs. If you fancy heading inland, follow the spectacular way-marked Biševo Geotrail from Salbunara Bay up to Stražbenica (around an hour), the highest point of the island, for views across the Adriatic to the tiny islets of Palagruža and Svetac. Carry on to Cape Gatula (about 55 minutes further), where you can go underground to explore now-deserted underground bunkers used in the Balkan War.
