  • Peaceful and family-friendly site at a vineyard in northern Croatia
  • Croatia Sahara 20 minutes’ drive and Bilogora half an hour’s walk
  • Covered dining area; wine tours, tastings and local food available
If you’re heading into Croatian wine country around Virovitica-Podravina County, you can learn about local vintages when you pitch up at Wine Park Cupen, five minutes’ drive from the quiet hamlet of Kozarevac. The partially shaded pitches are surrounded by greenery and next to the vineyards on a family-run winery, where you can get stuck into a complimentary wine-tasting experience and enjoy dining on local dishes. This is your chance to see the rural side of northern Croatia, well off the normal tourist route. Dogs are welcome free of charge, and happily the surrounding area features scenic forest and River Drava-side walking trails where you can all get some exercise – and of course, you can also take leisurely strolls around the vines. And what of the facilities? Wine Park Cupen is well set up with a shower block and washing-up sinks, a basic laundry room and chemical waste disposal. There are picnic tables scattered through the leafy grounds for alfresco dining, and a covered dining area too; kids are catered for with a small play area.

Local attractions

While on site, you’re free to wander the farm’s vineyards at will. There are several other wineries within 10 minutes’ drive, where you can sample the vintages and buy your favourite bottles as souvenirs. If angling is your thing, head to the coarse fishery at Pjeskara Šarje (20 minutes’ drive); alternatively you can take scenic walks alongside the meanders of the River Drava (25 minutes). If you have older kids, let them loose on the off-road biking trails at Motocross Staza Karasov Brijeg (five minutes); if that’s a bit too hardcore, then follow the sculpture trail up to the summit of Bilogora (half an hour’s walk) for views over the Virovitica-Podravina vineyards and forests. Alternatively, head for Croatia Sahara (20 minutes' drive) to encounter camels wandering over the sand dunes and pet the donkeys and ponies. For other days out, sample a bit of local history in Kloštar Podravski with a visit to its Franciscan monastery, or inspect the petrified remains of the former castle at Utvrda Gorbonok (both 10 minutes).
