  • Secluded rainforest site on Costa Rica’s stunning Osa Peninsula
  • On the edge of Corcovado National Park and 13km from Puerto Jiménez
  • A three-hour hike from town of Puerto Jiménez
Dreaming of jungle explores pushing through undergrowth, forging rivers and keeping an eye out for a huge array of local wildlife? Grab boots, bug spray and a sense of adventure and make immediate tracks for Osa Mountain Camping, a family-friendly site 13 kilometres from Puerto Jiménez in the Puntarenas region. The site is in lush rainforest on Costa Rica’s remote Osa Peninsula, so the adventure starts even before arrival – after check-in at Chosa Manglar Nature Retreat in Puerto Jiménez (don’t skip this step), it’s a three and a half-hour hike to base, traipsing through steamy forest and crossing the Río Nuevo several times. This is right on the edge of Corcovado National Park, which National Geographic has called ‘the most biologically intense place on Earth’, so embrace the rainforest escape by watching out for scarlet macaws flitting from tree to tree, sloths crawling along branches and boas slithering by. After reaching site, kicking back is a cinch and there's nothing to disturb guests other than bird calls and occasional nocturnal animal visitors. Set up somewhere with views over the spectacular greenery, spend days meeting the work horses on site, stay energised for daily hikes and wanders with evenings of grilling by the barbecue, and soak up all that sweet jungly peace and quiet before you have to (bah) head back to civilisation.

Local attractions

This is a dream site for anyone looking for a secluded getaway – getting to site on foot is the best way to travel, and exploring the nearby area requires a sturdy set of hiking boots and some strong hiking willpower. Venturing into Corcovado National Park less than five kilometres away, is a must: it’s the largest national park in Costa Rica, has cloud forests and mangrove swamps, and is home to monkeys, turtles, snakes, anteaters and slinking jaguars. There are plenty of trails for tenacious travellers to follow. Anyone tiring of land-based adventures should head to Golfo Dulce Marine Reserve just under four hours’ hike away – it’s a top spot for dolphin and whale watching, and taking to a kayak at sunset comes highly recommended for the best sightings. Get a feel for the old gold rush days with a trip to Dos Brazos (around six kilometres from base) for an afternoon’s gold panning, or strike out for the coast for different watery explorations: scuba diving and snorkelling on the the reefs off Playa Platanares, surfing at Cabo Matapalo’s Playa Pan Dulce and rapelling down King Louis Waterfall are all less than five hours’ hike away.
