  • Eco-friendly lodges in an elevated spot in the Valdivian rainforest
  • Niebla and the Pacific Ocean 15 minutes’ drive; Valdivia 20 minutes
  • Covered terrace; hot tub; self-guided trails to the Río Cutipai river
Forest bathing might have started out as a Japanese concept, but the good people at Lophosoria have taken the idea and run with it. This rather splendid site occupies an elevated spot in the heart of the Valdivian rainforest of southern Chile, a 20-minute drive from downtown Valdivia. Accommodation is in comfortable microlodges with hotel-quality beds, a fully equipped kitchen (though it’s well worth checking out the on-site restaurant, too) and eco-friendly toiletries in the bathroom. Every lodge also comes with recycling facilities, medicinal planters and a spacious covered terrace that’s a great spot for getting dinner ready (on the grill), alfresco dining or just unwinding (on the hammock). Speaking of unwinding: if the terrace hammock doesn’t cut it, you can always have a soak in your private hot tub. Lophosoria (named after a fern that grows in these very forests) has great views of Río Cutipai, just down the hill. After admiring the river from up high, chances are you can’t wait to swim in it. Good news: a trail takes you directly to a river beach. Meanwhile, another path takes you to the heart of the Santuario de la Naturaleza Humedal Cutipay (a walk of about three kilometres), a nature reserve where you can spot assorted birdlife and visit carpenters who craft boats by hand. Those who prefer oceanfront beaches head to Niebla (15 minutes), where a vast expanse of sand lapped by shallow waters is a fab spot to catch the sunset.

Local attractions

There is much more to Niebla than just its golden-sand beach. The town occupies a spur of land jutting out into the Valdivia River estuary, and Spanish-built fortifications include the clifftop Castillo de Niebla, with viewpoints, cannons and a museum. Encuentro Costumbrista is a popular spot for dining and traditional dance shows. Two museums sit across from each other in Valdivia, separated by the Calle-Calle River: one is the Museo Naval Submarino O’ Brien, where you can get a glimpse into the claustrophobic life of a submarine crew, and the other is the Museo Histórico y Antropológico Maurice van de Maele, with displays related to the Indigenous Mapuche peoples. Take a selfie next to the ‘Valdivia’ sign at the Mirador Letras ‘Valdivia’ Acceso Norte (half an hour), then take in views of the Río Cayumapu river. From there it’s another 35 minutes’ drive to the Nature Sanctuary Carlos Andwandter, an area of wetlands and forests inhabited by herons and otters.
