If you've headed to this part of Brazil in search of surf and spray, look no further: sandy José Gonçalves beach is a 20-minute walk from site. Rather stick to dry land instead? Horse riding tours around the local countryside are on the cards (20 minutes' drive). The nearby city of Armação dos Búzios (25 minutes) is home to more oceanfront offerings: there are several miles of beaches to explore here, but João Fernandes, Geriba and Brava beaches come particularly highly recommended. This is an upmarket kind of town: seafood fans should check out the string of swish fish restaurants around the port. But Búzios is also a place where visitors can get stuck in to outdoor adventure: deep-sea fishing opportunities can be arranged here, as can boat trips to the spectacular nearby islands of Ancora, Gravatás, Filhote and Feia. For another fab beachfront city, try Cabo Frio (35 minutes), so named for its slightly chillier waters. Swimwear fans should make a beeline for Bikini Street, a shoppers' paradise home to over 100 shops selling aquatic attire in all imaginable shapes and sizes.
