  • Friendly site in the centre of Vila do Abraão, on Ilha Grande
  • A few minutes' walk from the beach, dive centre and ferry dock
  • Kitchen on site; shops and restaurants within a five-minute walk
What a stunner is Ilha Grande… a gorgeous tropical island filled with virgin rainforest, secluded coves and sweeping surf beaches. And what a corker of an island location has Camping Sombra dos Coqueirais, in the village of Vila Abraão and only a few minutes’ gentle amble from restaurants, shops, a bakery and a sandy beach. It’s all easily doable from Rio de Janeiro – take a bus or drive from the city to Mangaratiba, then board a boat for the crossing to the island. The ferry will drop you about a minute’s walk from the site, so it’s not far to haul your kit once you’ve docked. That central village location isn’t just a useful one for eats; it’s also mighty handy for organising activities and outings: boat tours, scuba diving, paddleboarding and kayaking trips can all be sorted in the village. Setting out on foot? The site’s a good starting point for hikes through the island’s rainforests or over to the top surf spot of Praia Lopes Mendes (but do take a map… there’s some proper wilderness out there). Plenty of everyday essentials are sorted on site – there’s a kitchen (kitted out with stoves, fridges, crockery and the like), a small restaurant, a wifi connection and separate male and female bathrooms with hot showers. The whole place is under the watchful eye of a security service 24 hours a day to make sure all guests feel safe throughout their stay.

Local attractions

Ilha Grande’s rainforests are properly pristine, untouched by development thanks to its many years as a leper colony. That also means that lots of native wildlife still calls this place home: as you trek along the trails (for which maps are available) you may well be accompanied by monkeys, colourful birds and, if you’re really lucky, a glimpse of a capybara. Hiking trails of various lengths lead to points of interest including abandoned buildings, swimming spots and waterfalls, and one of the most popular leads to the surf waves of Praia Lopes Mendes. And if you’re wondering how you’re going to manage to navigate that far with a board under your arm… leave it behind, as there are rentals to be had at the beach. If you’d rather focus on the beach than the hike, stroll down to Vila Abraão’s own sandy stretch, or perhaps hire kayaks or paddleboards in town to paddle to nearby sheltered coves. Folk who dream of deserted sands can board boat trips to fulfill such wishes in the marine reserve on the far side of the island.
