  • Secure gated site less than five minutes’ walk from scenic sandy beach
  • A 35-minute drive from Angra dos Reis and two hours from Rio
  • Less than 10 minutes’ drive from ferries to the stunning Ilha Grande
Think of Brazil and what do you picture? If it’s blue skies, blue water and lengthy stretches of sand, you’ll be pleased indeed with Camping Garatucaia, a family-friendly site in Garatucaia 35 minutes’ drive from Angra dos Reis in Rio de Janeiro province. Kickstart hols right by getting an immediate taste of that beach buff lifestyle: the site is less than five minutes’ walk from the beach, where strolls along the sand, hours of lazing under the Brazilian sun, and cooling dips in the ocean await, and the perpetually hungry can be well served with a leisurely saunter to the bar at the far end of the beach. Unsurprisingly, there are plenty more spectacular beaches within easy reach if one follows the coast towards Angra dos Reis and beyond – expect white sands, sheltered bays and scenic views towards pretty islands, all within an hour. Stay well fed for all that splashing about by setting up the barbecue back at the gated site and venturing out to the nearby markets to pick up some choice produce to grill up. The site’s a quiet sun trap on lazy lying-about days and there’s secure on-site parking when wandering out on foot appeals.

Local attractions

Be sure to take a day trip (or several) across the bay to the spectacular Ilha Grande, where the big draw is the number of stunning beaches that line the coast. Go into adventurer mode to wander the forests, stumbling across waterfalls, pools and caves, then return to the sands for surfing, swims and eateries. It’s a five-minute drive from the site to the ferry pier, and crossings to the island are usually between 15 and 50 minutes long, depending on the boat. For afternoons of shopping, sightseeing and eating, Angra dos Reis is a good first step. The seaside town has shops and museums to explore and some photoworthy buildings to snap up, not to mention a pretty little beach for changes of scenery. The colonial streets of Paraty two hours away, are also well worth a visit: saunter among colourful houses, learn something at the museums or the houses of culture, or step into the past at the 18th-century Forte Defensor Perpétuo, originally designed to defend gold from passing pirates. In need of something a little more lively? Two hours away in Rio de Janeiro, the open arms of Christ the Redeemer are beckoning, the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema await, and the carnival vibes are in full swing... Climb the Escaderia Selaron, smell the roses in the botanical gardens, or do something daring by hang gliding or paragliding (or hitching a ride on the cable car) over the city.
