In the environmentally conscious Parque Ecológico Pico dos Cabritos, this is a prime spot for nature-filled getaways. The site has direct access into Pico dos Cabritos, bringing guests into close proximity with traditional adobe buildings, a natural pool for collecting sustainable drinking water, and hiking trails at all levels of difficulty. The site is in the foothills of Serra da Mantiqueira, so you'd be right to expect stunning vistas over Extrema and the valley it lies in. In fact, the more time spent gazing at pretty sights the better, as the site’s ethos is to live in a state of peace, reflection and awareness of the environment. Of course, not every day has to be fully peaceful. When a little more activity is appealing, dips in the outdoor pool and games of badminton or volleyball on the multisports field come highly recommended – all after days started on the right foot with breakfast in the café. Younger kids can make tracks for the colourful playground and dream up adventures in the play house, then reunite with the family for dinners cooked up in the shared kitchen.

Local attractions

Start hols with leisurely explores of the small city of Extrema (10 minutes’ drive), wandering in and out of shops, clambering up and down hills, and sampling local eats in the handful of restaurants dotted about. If larger cities appeal – and lengthier journeys aren’t a problem – make tracks for Campinas (an hour and a half) and its museums, gardens, small zoo and T-Rex Park theme park, or for the sprawling financial centre of Brazil that is São Paulo (two hours), where visitors can explore art museums, street murals, botanical gardens, an aquarium, theatres and a couple of zoos. Time out in nature can be sorted with hikes up Pedra Partida (an hour and 25 minutes) or Pedra do Baú (two hours and 50 minutes), or with a trip to the themed gardens of Jardim dos Pinhais Ecco Parque (two hours and 35 minutes), where guests can wander about Japanese, mountain, desert and Canadian gardens.
