Just off the southeastern coast of Brazil is spectacular Santa Catarina Island, known for its dense mangroves and lush swathes of Atlantic rainforest. And on the north of the island, half an hour’s drive from the city of Florianópolis, is cosy, peaceful Casa Hostel Mosaicos DyA.
Hardstanding tent pitches with electric hookup sit among colourful flowers and established monstera plants with leaves so large you’ll wonder what you’re doing wrong with your own plant back home. Maybe welcoming hosts Daniel and Angela (the D and A of the name) can share their green-fingered secrets…
Hang up a hammock and spend time on your pitch, taking in nature’s generous bounty. Alternatively, draw up a shortlist of the beaches you wish to visit during your stay. The island has so many gorgeous sandy stretches, you can probably drive to a different one each day. Start with Praia dos Ingleses (10 minutes’ drive), on the east coast, a gorgeous crescent of sand with reliable waves for surfing. On the north coast is Praia de Canasvieiras (10 minutes), with a long pier and numerous bars and restaurants where you can stop for a refreshing caipirinha. Or head west, to Praia de Santo Antônio de Lisboa (15 minutes), for unforgettable sunset views.
The site has a TV room and a launderette, plus a communal fridge and barbecue for those who are keen to cook their own meals. The nearest shop is about 100 metres away, and there are several more within a five-minute walk. The same goes for eateries, which range from pizzerias to sushi take-away joints.

Local attractions
If the kids are clamouring for water-based thrills, head to Agua Show Water Park (five minutes’ drive), a massive aquatic park with multiple pools and windy waterslides – plus a couple of straight but almost vertical ones, where you’ll emerge out of the mouth of an iguana or a crocodile.
Lagoa da Conceição (25 minutes) is a shallow-water lagoon surrounded by rainforest-covered hills. Hiking trails lead to outlooks with great views of the island (and the lagoon), and just inland on the western shore of the lake is Waterfall Costa da Lagoa, with a small natural pool.
When in Florianópolis (half an hour), check out the public market for the freshest produce and fish (and excellent dining spots). The elegant pink-and-white Palacio Cruz e Sousa, next to lush Praça XV de Novembro, houses a collection of paintings, sculpture and decorative arts.
