  • Lush and welcoming equatorial site on the scenic Marajó island
  • In Salvaterra, 15 minutes’ walk from the beach, bars and eateries
  • Restaurant, bike hire and outdoor recreational area on site
How does a mix of sandy beaches, wildlife spotting and consistently warm weather sound to you? If your answer is ‘Amazing, sign me up,’ make tracks for Pousada Boto, a family-friendly site in Salvaterra, in the Pará region of Marajó island. That island life is in full effect here. At 40,100 square kilometres (bigger than the Netherlands, fact fans), the equatorial Marajó is one of the largest river islands in the world, and it's chock-full of pretty beaches, lush interiors and coastal adventures. Stays on site must start with a beach day or two, as it’s less than 15 minutes’ walk to the nearest beach, Praia Grande de Salvaterra, tipped by those in the know to be one of the island’s best. As well as a lengthy sandy stretch to explore, Praia Grande is lined with restaurants and bars for local eats and brews, and live music is never far away for nights shimmying away to tropical tunes. For a break from the beach further-flung explores beckon, and bike hire on site should see guests sorted for wheels to pedal off to other corners of the island. Those who prefer to stay put on lazier days, on the other hand, can make the most of the ping pong, swimming pool, playing cards and board games at the site’s outdoor recreational area.

Local attractions

Start stays with explores of the small city of Salvaterra. Its restaurants, shops and craft markets (be sure to pick up some of the famed marajoara pottery) are all handily nearby – about 10 minutes’ easy walking will take guests to the centre, and there’s a dance club within 25 minutes. More rural wanders can be had too with saunters along the banks of the Paracauari river. Excursions outside of Salvaterra come highly recommended, and the on-site team will be happy to help organise jaunts to the city of Soure (a short ferry ride away, across the Paracauari), or to the stunningly scenic village and beach of Joanes. On the Soure side of the river, travel on to the spectacular Praia do Pesqueiro (about half an hour’s cycle from the city) for sandy strolls, dips in warm water and a gastro exploration of its food huts. The mangrove-studded stretch of Praia de Barra Velha (10 minutes' cycle) is a must too, for a slightly different style of sandy beach. While exploring the island, be sure to keep eyes peeled for alligators, sloths, scarlet ibises, capybaras and buffalo. The latter at least should be easy to spot – buffalo are the symbol of the island, even serving in many cases as police mounts.
