- Stunningly scenic mountainside site above the Valley of the Flowers
- Half an hour’s drive from La Paz and two hours from Lake Titicaca
- Cookery classes, hammocks, massages, and bar with beer, wine, cheeses
Take a big breath of fresh mountain air and settle in at Colibri Camping, a family-friendly camping and glamping site less than five minutes’ drive from the village of Jupapina (and half an hour from La Paz).
The site’s on a mountainside above the Valley of the Flowers, meaning nothing less than spectacular views are to be expected here – stretch out in a hammock, pull up a bench, or take refuge from the Bolivian sun in the shaded mirador and soak up that stunning vista towards Devil’s Tooth mountain and the Valley of the Moon.
Don’t just look either… make sure to get out and explore this stunning part of the country. Go for a self-guided trek through the valleys, take to horseback or a mountain bike saddle, get a taste of local culture and (more importantly?) cuisine in Jupapina or opt for a quad biking excursion through the mountains.
Prefer to stick closer to base? Opt for a few days on site, for there are options aplenty here too. Sign up for a three-hour massage to soothe tired muscles, bag a new read from the book exchange, challenge one of the other guests to chess, draughts or Monopoly, take a cookery class from a local, or slide along to the bar for Bolivian beers, wine and cheese. Hungry? Put those new skills to use in the fully equipped on-site kitchen.

Local attractions
This close to La Paz, not spending a day (or two, or three) in the Bolivian administrative capital would be a capital offence. Just half an hour’s drive from the site, visit vibrant and thriving markets, wander colourful streets packed with museums and cafés, explore museums of art, music, archaeology and cocaine, and stumble upon tours and tastings at the country’s first craft distillery.
Falling for the city is a little bit inevitable, so be sure to see this new crush from all angles. Claim a spot on the cable car network that starts 40 minutes from base to get sweeping views over the city and valley, or make the 45-minute journey to Devil’s Tooth mountain for hikes, views and fab photos of a rugged volcanic landscape.
Closer to the site, pay a call to some Bolivian and Andean locals – pumas, llamas, alpacas, jaguars, sheep and pigs – at the Zoológico Municipal Vesty Pakos Sofro, five minutes away, or set sights far further afield by asking the team (led by owners Emma and Rolando) to help organise excursions and tours or help get tickets to the Uyuni Salt Flats, the Bolivian Amazon and the stunning Lake Titicaca (two hours from base).
