  • Family-friendly site in a forested setting in the Kempen nature area
  • Lichtaart village five minutes’ drive; Turnhout 25 minutes
  • Outdoor pool, playground, sports court and restaurant; dogs welcome
If you fancy rambling around an area of sandstone hills, pine forests and colourful heathlands, you need to head to the Kempen. And within this gorgeous nature reserve, on the outskirts of the village of Lichtaart (five minutes’ drive, or a five-minute bike ride along a cycle path skirting the N123 road), Camping Floreal Kempen makes a great base for exploring. The site is well equipped for families, with a playground and a multi-sports field for kicking a ball or shooting hoops, plus ping-pong tables and a pétanque court. There’s also an outdoor swimming pool, not to mention a lushly forested setting that lends itself to pleasant shaded walks – with or without the family dog (a welcome guest here). Hiking and cycling trails depart from the site (or from just the road), taking you to the marshes of Snepkensvijver Heiberg (five minutes), which are home to birds like hobbies and goshawks, or to the Kleine Nete valley (10 minutes), where, if you’re lucky, you might spot beavers. Those looking for a cycling challenge might consider tackling the Herentals–Kasterlee mountain-bike route, with three circular trails for all levels, including the 17-kilometre red loop. And in the evening, the entire family can gather around a table at the on-site restaurant, which serves classic dishes like mussels and chips, plus soups and other simple meals.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked location as it was close to motorways

Disliked Let me first explain. This campsite was book solely because it was advertised as having an on site restaurant (which serves classic dishes like mussels and chips) and an outdoor swimming pool, and the write up on Pitchup made it sound amazing which for €40 we'd thought was acceptable.
We turned up only to find the reception closed however a young girl appeared and asked if I'd received an email that morning notifying me of the closure. We we then issued with a white envelope containing a key fob, security door card and two red wrist bands (apparently for the swimming pool). I was then also informed that the restaurant was closed, no explanation given. I asked where we could go, to which I was given the details of a restaurant: which we later discovered was also closed. On a site map we were shown being allocated pitch, 91. We have a 6m campervan and it just about fitted on the pitch length wise, although we had enough room on either side for chairs etc. On looking at the paperwork in the envelope we noticed on the typed instructions we'd actually been allocated pitch 156. So we thought we'd have a look to see if that was any better. No that had a mobile home on it already. So back to pitch 91.
Trying to stay positive we decided to use the pool. It wasn't quite what I would describe as a swimming pool more of a large inflatable paddling pool. The large inflatable ring around the edge occupied most of its footprint, it fitted onto a tennis court with a lot of room to spare (see attached photo). As it was already rather crowded we decided that we didn't fancy it anymore.
The security card for the showers wasn't required as all door were wide open.
We tried looking on the map for rubbish bins but couldn't find any highlighted, so after both of us had walked around looking we eventually gave up and used a small litter bin near the pool.
We've travelled all over Europe and the UK in our campervan and this was definitely a disappointment, massively over priced for what you got. All very disorganised.

Local attractions

There are plenty of family-friendly activities at Ark van Noë (five minutes’ drive), where kids can climb and slide at the adventure playground or get up close and personal with a range of farmyard beasties (plus wallabies) at the petting zoo. It’s also possible to hire canoes and kayaks to explore the river Kleine Nete. In addition to a weekly flea market, Turnhout (25 minutes) has a leafy town centre with cobbled streets lined with independent stores, brasseries and chocolate shops. The imposing Castle of the Dukes of Brabant, surrounded by a moat, sits just across from a modern cultural centre with rotating exhibitions, concerts and dance performances. In Antwerp (an hour and 15 minutes), walk the historic Sint-Anna’s Tunnel under the river Scheldt, stroll around the town centre taking in the splendid Gothic architecture of the cathedral, or head into the DIVA Museum for a primer on jewellery and diamonds.
