  • Peaceful site on the river Drava, a five-minute drive from Greifenburg
  • Weissensee 25 minutes’ drive; Lienz 50 minutes
  • Open-air pool with mountain views; beach volleyball and play area
In the Carinthia region and a five-minute drive from the pretty village of Berg im Drautal, Camping Berggruss is in an enviable location among woods in a peaceful valley carved by the river Drava. This is a top site for those who are after epic Alpine hikes and mountain-biking excursions with far-reaching mountain views (Berggruss sits in the foothills of the Kreuzeck Group range) and also water-based activities – either on the Drava itself (the stretch flowing past the site is part of the Drau Paddle Trail) or at the Weissensee (25 minutes’ drive), in whose remarkably clear waters you can also swim and fish. If you feel uncertain about lake swimming, it's handy to know that the site has a 10x15-metre pool, where you can float gently while taking in spectacular views of the surrounding Alps. Other facilities include a beach volleyball court, a playground with swings and climbing structures, and ping-pong tables. The nearest golf club is just across the Drava (about a kilometre away), and there are a couple of horse riding stables within a half-hour of the site. In short, it's unlikely you'll be bored around here. As for dining, you're welcome to light up a barbecue, or the town of Greifenburg is a five-minute drive away, with a couple of restaurants and a café serving utterly decadent cakes. On-site amenities include a modern toilet/shower block, washing-up stations, a launderette (with tumble dryers) and recycling facilities.

Local attractions

The waters of the Weissensee (25 minutes’ drive) are said to be so clean as to be of drinking quality. At the easternmost tip of the lake, Strandbad Stockenboi has a diving school and a lido with a trampoline, while away from the water (but within sight of it), the Weißensee Bergbahn is a cable car climbing up to forested trails. The mountain-bike park at the alpine resort of Lienz (50 minutes) has trails ranging from family-friendly routes with a gentle gradient to challenging tracks for experienced riders only. There’s also plenty for children in the area, from a petting zoo to a forest playground with miniature adventure park. In the historic city of Villach (an hour and 15 minutes), head to Wasenboden, a park on the Drava where you can sit in the shade while the kids practise their tricks in the skatepark or have a go at the climbing wall. On the outskirts of town, the KärntenTherme Warmbad-Villach is a large thermal complex with waterslides and indoor and outdoor areas.
