  • Spacious, shady and dog-friendly site 20 kilometres from the coast
  • A 20-minute drive to Forrest Beach and 25 minutes to Lucinda
  • On-site shaded salt water pool and camp kitchen; easy access to shops
If North Queensland’s reefs, waterfalls and golden-sand beaches are calling your name, plant yourself down at Ingham Tourist Park. A 40-minute walk from the centre of Ingham, known for its fields of sugar cane and Italian heritage (resulting in a lot of great Italian restaurants or shops, by the way), you’ll certainly be well-based… To the east is the ocean, the Great Barrier Reef and no shortage of spectacular beaches to set yourself down on for the day. You might like to have a paddle at Forrest Beach (20 minutes’ drive) or put your fishing rod into action at Taylors Beach (25 minutes) or Lucinda (25 minutes). The latter is also a great place to keep watch over the world’s biggest bulk sugar loading facility at six kilometres in length. To the west are the land-based treats, like volcanoes, waterfalls and mountain ranges. Broadwater in Abergowrie, half an hour’s drive away, is an especially splendid creek for swims. Then, there’s the largest island national park, Hinchinbrook Island National Park, to the northeast; ferries depart from Ramsay Bay or George Point and take around an hour, after around half an hour’s drive. Pairing adventure with a healthy dose of relaxation is a good formula for any break. So, whether you’re travelling or working in North Queensland, count on this dog-friendly, family-friendly site to be peaceful and friendly. Spacious and shady, it has a shaded saltwater pool, a camp kitchen and other convenient features such as barbecues, showers, toilets, laundry facilities and wifi.

Local attractions

Pick your island of choice… aside from Hinchinbrook Island and its just splendid Jurassic features, other accessible islands include Palm Islands (an hour and 45 minutes’ ferry ride from Townsville, an hour and 20 minutes’ drive away) and Orpheus Island (two hours’ ferry from Townsville). Both have splendid beaches and excellent snorkelling. If it’s just a relaxing beach stroll or some laidback fishing that you fancy, make Dungeness (25 minutes) your destination. Historic Halifax (20 minutes) is also great for those lazier days, and it has the Herbert River Museum (20 minutes) as a reminder of bygone days. Closer by is the largest sugar mill in the southern hemisphere, Victoria Mill (10 minutes), and a splendid ivy-coloured stone church nearby. Outdoorsy days are also full steam ahead: head to Mount Fox (an hour and 20 minutes) to see a volcanic crater up close, the TYTO Wetlands (half an hour’s walk) for a small walk with plenty of wildlife or Jourama Falls (25 minutes) for impressive waterfalls, swimming holes and a picnic area. In Paluma (an hour), the surrounding rainforest has more waterfalls and rainforest walks closer to the clouds - the village is high up.
