General

  • Calm and quiet wildlife haven 20 minutes' drive from the coast
  • Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads both within 40 minutes' drive
  • Handy for the area's annual music festivals

Not only is Maca’s Camping Ground splendidly placed for trips to Mount Jerusalem National Park (a handy 15 minutes’ drive away), it’s got some pretty spectacular views of it too, and the beaches of Byron Bay are a mere 40 minutes by car.

Looking out over the northern New South Wales countryside, Maca’s lies just off the Main Arm Road north-west of Mullumbimby town in the Northern Rivers region, 12 kilometres from Mullumbimby and 30 kilometres from Byron Bay; the closest beaches are 20 minutes’ drive away, and Mount Warning and Mount Uki are both within about 45 minutes’ drive.

The site is in a calm and quiet wildlife haven dotted with macadamia and chestnut trees – while on site (peaceful day and night), collect bags of macadamia nuts and pick mulberries to munch straight from the bush – this place is so chilled and friendly you’ll be planning your return visit even before you’ve had time to settle in.

For birdwatchers and nature spotters there’s heaps of wildlife like bush turkeys and peacocks around too, and if you’re up for getting out and about around the local area (highly recommended), bring a good pair of walking shoes because there’s also plenty of bushwalking to be done up the mountain.

As befits a site as scenic and peaceful as this, campfires are allowed so you’ll be able to spend your evenings out under the stars should that be your pitchside fancy, and if you’re into eating alfresco then the barbecue area takes care of this easily too, with all fare easily prepared beforehand at the well-equipped campers’ kitchen.

The owners are often hailed as friendly, helpful and extra accommodating, providing a shuttle service to several music festivals that take place locally throughout the year when they’re in full swing.

The peace and quite and the amenities were adequate. The town itself was pleasant and everyone we spoke with was lovely. Macadamias everywhere for the picking.

    Disliked:

Paid for firewood asked when arrived but never got it. No idea who was running the place, lack of managment. Free wifi was nowhere to be found passwords didn't work and noone knew what it actually was.

I didn't end up staying here as it felt quite 'grotty' and unsafe. 28/08/2018

    trees, wildlife and nature
the bathroom and kitchen area was clean, functional and had a hippy feel

    Disliked:

Needed a big rubbish cleanup. Lots of old broken furniture, old lounge, old looking mish-mash of tarp dwellings, and general rubbish everywhere. On driving in, immediately to the left was an old tarp lean-to with an old ripped lounge inside, and various tables/buckets/papers strewn around etc. Had a shanti-town feel. I couldn't find anyone to meet me, despite following the directions to beep the horn and ring the caretaker phone number. I walked around the camp area and there was literally broken chairs, tables and what looked like junk piles everywhere. I didn't feel safe to camp there, so left.

Maccas has the most lovely warm host, Sam. I felt so welcomed. It's very green with thick grass and nice shade trees and lots of creeks. (though they are a bit small for swimming) The creeks can cut off roads out in heavy rains, but apart from that, it's lovely and so cheap at only $15/ night with camp kitchen and bathroom facilities including how water, stoves, fridge and dining area. very friendly peaceful camping grounds.

Local attractions

A short and simple 20-minute drive from beaches and the town of Brunswick Heads off the famed Bruce Highway, Macas is well placed for a stopover while road tripping around Australia’s spectacular East Coast.

Byron Bay, about 40 minutes’ drive away, is known and travelled to for its beaches, surfing and scuba diving sites and fun party vibe. On the headland too is Cape Byron State Conservation Park, with walking trails, a lighthouse and scenic lookouts, and between June and November you can spy humpback whales from spots like Captain Cook Lookout.

For heaps of spectacular walking trails, Jerusalem National Park is adjacent to the grounds of Maca’s Camping Ground, or otherwise a 10-minute pootle will take you right to its border.
