General

  • Extensive camping field in a wild area near a lake
  • Wildlife haven: look out for buzzards, newts, toads and otters
  • Wild swimming allowed in the lake

The extensive camping field at Gwalia Farm is in a wild area near a lake, with flattened patches perfect for pitching tents. The area has plenty of wildlife including orchids, dragonflies and damselflies, buzzards, kites, frogs, newts, toads and sometimes nightjars, glow worms and even the occasional otter.

Treated spring water is available in the neighbouring field and campfires are permitted. Showers are available at the farmhouse by advance arrangement for a small charge and guests are welcome to swim in the small lake (please note that the site doesn't offer any safety equipment or supervision).

The farm has goats, chickens and sheep, and a large vegetable garden using organic principles. Cars are parked a short walk from the field.

The site was just what we wanted. Secluded and basic and it was just perfect. Back to the bare basics. The owners were lovely, we even brought some homemade sausages from them which were delicious. We had a campfire each night which was brilliant under the stars.

Our little yorkie dog Bailey loved every minute of it, it was safe for him to wander around the site too!

We will 100% be staying again and cannot wait!

Ideal for a wild camping experience...with the luxury of a loo! 04/09/2018

The solitude. The simplicity. No kids allowed. Lake to swim in.

    Disliked:

Nothing really. The fact that other campers had to walk through our otherwise very private pitch to get to the lake was a little frustrating. A separate path would work better.

Peaceful wild site with a lovely lake 02/09/2018

The wildness of the site and the lake (which I swam in and loved) surrounded by dragonflies and birdsong. The location is great. Right in the middle of Glyndwrs Way which you can walk in either direction directly from the site. Gorgeous views on this walk. Ynyslas and Aberdyfi beaches are not far. Aberdyfi (Cemetary beach)being my favourite of the two. Machynlleth is just a few miles away and the fish and chips from Hannighan”s Top Shop are well worth getting and bringing back to eat by the campfire.
Our two dogs had a lovely time too.

    Disliked:

The outdoor sink wasnt functional, no water supply to It and the stream under it not deep enough to get water from. The sink was consequently unused and filthy. Nice idea but didn’t work. We purchased a washing up bowl for dishes etc. I believe the site is being restructured this week (1st week Sept 18) and maybe that is part of that.
Had to walk through other people’s pitches to leave our pitch and they had to walk through ours to get to the lake. We didn’t mind but some other campers felt uncomfortable and that made it a little awkward at times. I think this may also be sorted out in the pitch restructure so each pitch has its own access and everyone can freely access the lake. .
The cost for the dogs. £2.00 per dog per night is a lot with two dogs staying a week, (it made the cost £16 per night for us) £1 per dog would be more reasonable.

Rustic, rural, quiet and exceptionally beautiful. 4 pitches in a field with fires allowed. As close to wild camping with a compost loo as you will get without actually wild camping.

    Disliked:

Running water was quite far away but there is work being done to bring to closer to the tent area

I stayed the weekend with my husband and our two cockapoohs. We had a beautiful time. Amy and Dee were more than hospitable, they greeted us on our arrival and were on hand to provide logs, kindle and fire lighters.
It is a beautiful site small with large enough pitches. Upon our arrival there were two other tents, three including our own. Which is ideal if you don’t like large busy campsites. The sawdust toilet was a new experience for us, which we found to be an amazing experience and not as daunting ans we had initially thought
    Thank you Dee and Amy
We will definitely be back again 😀
P.s I forgot to mention that there are ample place with public footpath providing breath taking view as you climb the mountain sides

From Aberystwyth, take the A487 to Machynlleth then the A489 to Cemmaes. In Cemmaes turn up hill (left if travelling West, right if travelling east). Continue up the hill (don't turn off toward Brynmeirig/Treehouses), and at the top of the hill the road takes a sharp right, continue following the road down a steep hill. The road then turns sharp left, past Troed-y-Ffordd, Gwalia is the next property, a yellow farmhouse with outbuildings. The camping lay-by is past the house on the left-hand side. There is a sign on the entrance to the camping field - pitch where you like and drop by the house to say hello.

From Shrewsbury, take the A458 west to Mallwyd, then take the A470 south to Cemmaes. Follow directions as above.
