General

  • Quiet caravan park close to Hay-on-Wye
  • Beauty salon on site
  • Five-minute walk to local pub and restaurants

Some folks who go off merrily camping are brave enough not to care about their barnet or their looks for the duration. Some, however, are not. (Cough.) If you fall into the latter camp, you might join us in hailing the astuteness of the peeps at Millfield Caravan Park near the Brecon Beacons, who have added a beauty salon on site for guests to keep everything looking purty.

(We also think it's mighty clever to have a site so near to bookish Hay on Wye, and at the base of the Black Mountains, and close to the mighty River Wye: verily we would combine mountain and Brecon Beacon and riverside walks with reading and beering and picnicking.)

Millfield is in the small village of Three Cocks and – also clever – is only a five-minute walk from its local pub and restaurants. It's a quiet site with friendly and helpful owners and has pitches in a flat, level field as well as well-kept loos and a shower.

A shop is on site and a pub, restaurant, garden centre and coaching house are all within a couple of minutes' walk.

Great flat field with electric, nice and peaceful, toilets and shower very clean. The owner Peter was friendly and accommodating. Couple for nice pubs 2-3 minutes away. Three Cocks Coaching Inn (my wife chuckled about that name). The Old Barn great atmosphere with very nice food. We are new to motor-homing and will definitely be going back to Millfield.

peter was very nice and The pub being so close.

    Disliked:

We felt it wasn't really a campsite. It was essentially a field next to a busy working yard full of abandoned and some working vehicles. It was also a storage facility for some pretty run down caravans which seemed to have the best pitches, away from the road and backing onto a pretty field. The road was busy and noisy at night but otherwise the campsite was quiet until the morning when the workshop opened up. When we arrived we drove past 3 times as it was impossible to see the entrance. There was no reception so we had no idea what to do. We found a phone number and called peter who came over immediately. There was no where to walk the dog from the campsite and that was our fault for not researching better. The facilities were clean but very, very basic. All in all, the price at £23 a night was higher than some far nicer sites we have stayed at.

The area was beautiful, with easy access to all surrounding locations. The owner was friendly and welcoming and helpful of the local tourist attractions.

    Disliked:

The description of the site advised that there was a shop and a filling station on site, of which there were neither. The ladies shower facilities was 1 shower and 2 toilets in a portacabin. If you used the shower facility then you would need to lock the outer door to the cabin so that no-one could enter to use the toilets whilst you were in there as the shower door is made of clear glass. There were other toilet facilities but they were away from the site/field. There were no refuse bins located in the field so you had to take your rubbish away with you. The entrance to the site is not very well signposted and is a gap in the hedge, we drove past 3 times before we realised where we had to enter.

Budget site handy for brecon beacons and 4 waterfalls trail. 11/06/2017

The owner was very welcoming and offered advice on where to pitch. It was handy for the 4 waterfalls trail which I recommend if waterfalls are your thing, also close enough to brecon beacons. It's a basic no frills site but it has a lovely warm shower and you don't get charged for using the shower unlike at other sites. It's right near the 3 cocks inn which has a lovely (although small) public bar and the manager there was very friendly and welcoming. There is also a bar across the road (the old barn) which is more for families/groups and is very interesting. I missed out on the brecon beacons this time around due to weather conditions but if I get around to going back for the brecon beacons this site is at the top of my list for price and had everything I needed. Also forgot to mention the site was very well maintained and the amenities, although limited were very clean. In short if you're looking for a cheap but reasonable base camp for doing things in the locality it's well worth using this site. I gave child friendliness a 3 as there's nothing really there for children but the site is clean and safe and if you take something for them to do, they can do so safely i.e. frisbee/football.

The grass was good quality to pitch on and the price was reasonable.

Location was easy to find and not too bad to use for the Hay Festival five miles away.

    Disliked:

It's a lot more basic than most campsites, it's basically a field with a few EHU points dotted around. The shop was closing down the following week so the shelves were bare.

Also, the one Ladies portokabin toilet block holds two toilet cubicles and one shower. When someone is using the shower the toilets are out of use although there was another one on the petrol station forecourt that could be used (but with no door handle on the inside and a very stiff door to open).

There is no hot water tap to wash up dishes. You need to boil a kettle and bring it over to a sink that's not connected to water and add cold water from the nearby stand pipe. Bit of a palaver really.

There are also some people living permanently on the site. Not travellers per se but that is their permanent home.

I wouldn't stay again due to the basic facilities.

Local attractions

What a lot there is to do as you wend your way around the Wye region… Millfield Caravan Park is a short distance from the scenic River Wye for fishing and/or dreamy riverside wandering, and is on a local bus route for easy peasyness in getting elsewhere.

The Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and the bookshop town of Hay on Wye are the most popular picks in these parts, but there's a fair bit to do very close to the site too, like a tennis court, climbing centre and gym half a mile away, and fishing and canoeing within a mile. Several walks start straight from the site.

Horse riding is available two miles away and waterskiing within five miles. A golf course is 11 miles from the site.
