We’re a small family-run campsite just two miles from Trecastle and 20 minutes west of Brecon in the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park. Our lovely old farmhouse is set in 5 acres. To call it 'beautiful' is an understatement – but we would say that, we live here!

Chickens, owls, kingfishers, red kites, bats, foxes, and otters. Just a few of the creatures we share our land with. As such, we do all we can to keep it looking nice for them and for you.

Ynysfaen is all about peace and tranquillity – a basecamp to explore and enjoy mother nature doing what she does best. We’re not into late nights so we have a ‘no noise policy’ after 10.30pm. On the other hand, we love early mornings – and waking up to the sounds of the babbling River Usk, the dawn chorus, and the gentle clucking of chickens. If you share this sentiment, then you should really enjoy Ynysfaen.

A little different…

We like to think we’re a little different from most other campsites in the area. Here’s why…

Camping, not caravanning – tents and trailer tents are welcome, but sorry, no motorhomes or caravans,

Canvas, not cars – no vehicles allowed on the camping field. There are wheelbarrows to cart stuff to your pitch, and if you need a hand, just holler!

Quality, not quantity – we love sardines, but only on toast. So you’ll have plenty of room to pitch your tent.

Seclusion, not isolation – Ynysfaen feels far from the madding crowd, but there’s plenty of civilisation nearby, too.

Heat, without hassle – for £5, we provide firebaskets, logs and kindling for those chilly evenings.

Simplicity, not luxury – we have a modern shower and toilet block, and a covered washing up area, with hot and cold water but no electricity hook-up.

Basics, not banquets – there’s no shop, but you can buy free range eggs laid by our own chickens and seasonal homegrown fruit and veg.

As we are a fairly small site, we prefer you to book, you can do this via email or through UK Campsite. For more information, email

    Strap in!!!

First arrived, met the guy that runs it, lovely fella. Very welcoming. So far liking this. Really nice site. Good dark sky and a nice little stream along side. Calm atmosphere on the field, not too many people.

However sadly this was all tainted when we encountered the wife.
Very rude and abrupt and talks to you like you've just walked into her house on Christmas Day and peed on the kids!

Don't like being talked down too especially when I made a mistake about what bins to use. They were cleary labelled, glass, plastic, paper etc near to the exit, where most bins are located in 99% of campsites I've been too! However apparently these were the wrong bins. Instead of being politely shown I was talked too like someone who had just decided to take a dump in her bin(maybe I should have) When I went to move off I split the rubbish on the floor by accident. Instead offering to help, she chuckled and wondered off.

Also spoke down to my friend when he went to just look at what the deal was with the firewood. She again flings open her door shouts 'leave that alone, we will put some out later. Just leave it'. Annoying and unnecessary when we were just looking.

So behold the 'one star' Shame really, good manners and hospitality are important in this industry. Hope they learn from this!

Local attractions

Take on the great outdoors – or just let it wash over you.

Whatever you’re into, there’s lots to get up to – whether you’re the adventurous type or just want to chill out in the bosom of mother nature. There’s fishing on the Usk Reservoir, 5 minutes’ drive up the valley. There’s mile upon mile of spectacular walking with breathtaking views of the Beacons and Black Mountains. There’s road cycling and mountain biking (we can arrange drop-offs and pick-ups), as well as pony trekking, mountain boarding, canoeing and canyoning. And for the gentler of mind and body, there are some great local attractions like Dan yr Ogof Show Caves and Big Pit, Blaenavon. We’re really just scratching the surface here, so if you’re stuck for inspiration, just ask, we’ve got lots of ideas.
