We enjoyed our weekend at Cwmsoar.…
Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch
Liked We enjoyed our weekend at Cwmsoar. The campsite is clean, well kept and in a peaceful location. The owners were friendly and great that you could borrow a fire pit and buy logs onsite (bring cash!) Toilets were immaculate for portaloos.
Disliked We felt the walk to the lake for paddleboarding was perhaps made to seem easier on the campsite description than it is in reality - it’s pretty hilly if you’re carrying your own gear and took longer than expected to access the lakeshore. We took our boards down thinking this, along with swimming (based on the description), were allowed, but we were soon told by the reservoir police that we were not allowed to swim/paddleboard from the side of the lake we were on (the side walkable from the campsite) and instead would have to continue the walk around the reservoir (40mins or so we were told by other walkers) where we could pay to do those activities from the visitor’s centre. On a hot day with paddleboards on our backs and dogs in tow, this obviously wasn’t an option! So not a comment on the campsite but a word of warning to anyone planning to do the same!

From the manager: Thank you for taking time out for your detailed comments. Were pleased to hear you did enjoy your stay at Cwmsoar.
Im sorry you took your paddle boards on the woodland path to the North access of Llandegfedd lake. As you say its not a suitable route for paddle boards and access to the water is not permitted in this area.
We have information on site for Llandegfedd Lake, that explains opening times and that access to water/swimming is not permitted on the North Nature Reserve end of the lake.
There is a lovely woodland walk from Cwmsoar to the North Nature Reserve side of the lake [15 - 20 minutes], it is part of the circular walk and leads on to the visitors centre.
For those who are less able there is a North carpark and flat area from which to view the lake.
Llandegfedd lake visitors centre hosts many water activities, including paddle boarding, swimming and sailing and has a cafe. Please view their website for details.
We advertise as a basic site, with basic facilities. We have portaloos and use environmentally friendly fill.
We do not have washrooms, showers or kitchens.

A lovely quiet spot near walking routes
Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch
Liked Quietness, location and closeness to walking routes and forest etc. Permission to have a raised firepit was excellent - and to have a dog. Portaloos were clean and well stocked.
Disliked Nothing really. We wanted a no frills campsite and didn't need fancy amenities e.g. shower blocks etc just for one night so it was perfect.

Nice for 1 night for adults and older children only
Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch
Liked Quiet, small fields, tents in separate field to motorhomes, cheap
Disliked No bins, only 2 portaloos, no showers (this was stated when booking), no kitchen wash station, very, very basic, tent field had no barrier between field and big drop to river

From the manager: Oh dear Kirsty, perhaps we should give up and close down 🙈. Im sorry you were disappionted with your stay at Cwmsoar.
We encourage people to report any issues when on site, we do our very best to oblige. We will look into your comments.
There is a watercourse/ stream running down the side of the camp field which is pretty much dried up during the summer, most who visit enjoy the stream.
We do not have any big drops to a river on site.
We have signs that state; children are to be supervised at all times, for their safety.
Our portaloos are cleaned and serviced regularly, but can be affected by the person using the facilities before you.
We advertise as a basic site, natural peaceful, with minimal facilities and our prices reflect this.
If you are looking for the facilities of a commercial site then we're not for you !!
If you are a biker dont stay there,
Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch
Liked I am a biker and this was the first time I was using this camp site. I sent a message in advance asking if I could have a pitch that was not too soft/muddy so I could make sure the bike stand would not sink into the grass but I did not get a reply.
Disliked I was the only person on the site when I arrived, not a single other person. There was no one there to sign into or came to check on me. The grass was very soft and muddy so the bike stand did sink into the mud so I could not stay there and had to leave and find an alternative. If I had been able to see someone they may have been able to help but that was not the case. A very simple site, only portable loos and expensive for what it is.

From the manager: Dear Robert
We are sorry to hear of your disapointment with Cwmsoar. Sorry we missed you as always happy to help fellow bikers.
We live onsite, if support is needed, just send a text. You were spotted leaving the site, Its not possible to be on the camp field perminantly awaiting arrivals.
We had the forcast for heavy rain the day of your booking, this can affect the pitches. We advertise as having grass pitches and our facilities are portaloos.
There is a hard parking area on site and split slabs provided for firepits that might serve purpose for bike stand.
As fellow bikers we always travel with a side stand puck, they can be very handy !!!
We often welcome bikers to the site and have not experienced any issues.

What customers say
Cwmsoar is a basic, quiet campsite praised for its peaceful rural location and friendly, helpful owners. Guests appreciate the immaculately clean portaloos and well-maintained pitches, with many enjoying the surrounding countryside and nearby walks to Llandegfedd Reservoir. While some mention the lack of showers and dishwashing facilities, most find the site ideal for self-sufficient campers and those seeking a digital detox. Accessibility for larger vehicles and the availability of fire pits are also noted positives.

Liked This was a lovely quiet site, well laid out and peaceful. It has basic amenities - toilets, water and waste disposal - but no showers and you need to take your rubbish with you (not a hard task). We were a self-contained motorhome so no problems for us. Friendly owners, would definitely use again if in the area.
Disliked Nothing.
