  • Small, wild site surrounded by woodland between Usk and Pontypool
  • A 20-minute drive to Raglan Castle, and 40 minutes to Tintern Abbey
  • Watersports and fishing at Llandegfedd Reservoir 20 minutes' walk
A small and nature-oriented site in Monmouthshire countryside near Pontypool, Cwmsoar Camping has basic but spacious field and orchard pitches on a working farm surrounded by ancient woodlands. Quiet and rural it might be, but it’s also close to the lovely old village of Usk (10 minutes’ drive), with its fab – and handy – selection of pubs and takeaways to keep you fed and watered. As this is a wild site, facilities are few – mains water, portable toilets and a toilet-emptying station. For those going down the self-catering route on their break, barbecues and firepits are allowed on site and you can pick up goodies in Usk’s convenience stores too. Alternatively, you can try your luck in New Inn, a mile away, which has shops and places to eat. This peaceful dog-friendly spot is within easy distance of Llandegfedd Reservoir (a 15- to 20-minute woodland walk), where you can soon be out on the water for wild swimming, paddleboarding and canoeing adventures. Not brought your gear? No worries, simply hire boards and boats from Llandegfedd Visitor & Watersports Centre (10 minutes’ drive). For more sedate pleasures, the lake is a hopping place for fly fishing for trout from the bankside, and you can follow a circular walk along the water’s edge through quiet woodland or enjoy a short stroll with the kids through fields.

What customers say

Quiet, natural campsite with friendly hosts. Clean loos & great value. Perfect for woodland walks. Limited facilities (no showers) & iffy mobile signal, but well-kept and recommended.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked I am a biker and this was the first time I was using this camp site. I sent a message in advance asking if I could have a pitch that was not too soft/muddy so I could make sure the bike stand would not sink into the grass but I did not get a reply.

Disliked I was the only person on the site when I arrived, not a single other person. There was no one there to sign into or came to check on me. The grass was very soft and muddy so the bike stand did sink into the mud so I could not stay there and had to leave and find an alternative. If I had been able to see someone they may have been able to help but that was not the case. A very simple site, only portable loos and expensive for what it is.

From the manager: Dear Robert
We are sorry to hear of your disapointment with Cwmsoar. Sorry we missed you as always happy to help fellow bikers.

We live onsite, if support is needed, just send a text. You were spotted leaving the site, Its not possible to be on the camp field perminantly awaiting arrivals.

We had the forcast for heavy rain the day of your booking, this can affect the pitches. We advertise as having grass pitches and our facilities are portaloos.

There is a hard parking area on site and split slabs provided for firepits that might serve purpose for bike stand.

As fellow bikers we always travel with a side stand puck, they can be very handy !!!

We often welcome bikers to the site and have not experienced any issues.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Loved the location, so beautiful. Woodland walk right on the doorstep and the LLlandegfedd Reservoir is a 10 minute walk through the woodland and across some fields. The Pontymoile basin (canal) is a short drive away (around 10-12 minutes) There is a launch point for paddle boards or kayaks and a quaint barge that is a cafe there too. Facilities available as well as free parking. Highly recommend.

Henry and Sue were very welcoming hosts, Sue provided lots of local information as well as checking in on our recent experiences of things we had visited locally.

Pitches were suffifient size, well kept and easy to access. On initial approach it seemed the gate would be difficult for us to navigate, but in fact the middle post is removable so we could easily navigate into the site.

Facilities were very clean.

Highly recommend the site - great value! We will be back.

Disliked Country roads with motorhome. We are 7.2m, wouldn't have wanted to be longer, but do appreciate the site does not allow longer vehicles anyway. Country roads are unavoidable for beautiful locations, I do appreiate that - so this is not a moan at all

Local attractions

You’re never short of an ancient building in this corner of Wales; start off a day off castle-bagging at Usk (10 minutes’ drive) where medieval ruins border landscaped gardens, or head for Raglan, once a mighty defence castle and now open for self-guided tours. Moated Caerphilly Castle (35 minutes) has a trail of underground passages to explore, and if you haven’t had your fill of history by now, try glorious Tintern Abbey (40 minutes) for a stroll among peaceful ruins. If you’d rather be yomping than mugging up on history, there are plenty of challenging hikes in the Brecon Beacons National Park (15 minutes) or stroll to Symonds Yat Rock in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (40 minutes). The whole area is full of places to get out for a great walk or bike ride, and there's dry slope skiing in Pontypool too. If the kids are behaving, treat them to subterranean mine tours at Big Pit National Coal Museum (20 minutes), and if you all fancy a big city day out, Cardiff (45 minutes) hits the spot with rip-roaring RIB cruises around the bay and international musicals at Wales Millennium Centre.
