A small and dog-friendly pop-up site in Monmouthshire countryside near Pontypool, Cwmsoar Camping has well-maintained, spacious field and orchard pitches on a working farm surrounded by ancient woodlands. Quiet and rural it might be, but it’s also close to the lovely old village of Usk (10 minutes’ drive), with its fab – and handy – selection of pubs and takeaways to keep you fed and watered. As this is wild camping, facilities are few – mains water, portable toilets and a toilet-emptying station. For those going down the self-catering route on their break, barbecues and firepits are allowed on site and you can pick up goodies in Usk’s convenience stores too. Alternatively, you can try your luck in New Inn, a mile away, which has shops and places to eat. This peaceful spot is within easy distance of Llandegfedd Reservoir (10 minutes’ walk), where you can soon be out on the water for wild swimming, paddleboarding and canoeing adventures. Not brought your gear? No worries, simply hire boards and boats from Llandegfedd Visitor & Watersports Centre (10 minutes’ drive). For more sedate pleasures, the lake is a hopping place for fly fishing for trout from the bankside, and you can follow a circular walk along the water’s edge through quiet woodland or enjoy a short stroll with the kids through fields.

There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.

A queen size high level air mattress is provided and single standard air mattresses as needed. Fleece blankets and cushions are provided for your comfort. You will need to bring your own bedding. Gazebo is provided with the bell tent for cooking and your leisure. Gas camp stove and cooking utensils. Night lamp Logs are sold on site along with kindling and paper with a firepit. Porta loos are on site and cold outdoor hose/shower. No shower block on site.

Please bring your own towels, bed linen, duvets and pillows.

Liked: What a fantastic little wild camping site! Host was very welcoming amd informative. Was very quiet and peaceful Rented a fire pit which came with wood kindling and news paper. Was allowed BBQs Went for walks through the forest and down to the stream Had an excellent time!

Liked: Lovely clean site . The owners are very friendly people. Was ideal for our trial campervan stay. Toilets were clean! Beautiful area to explore recommend Usk. Definitely go again!

Liked: We absolutely loved everything about the site! The owner was lovely and on hand when any help was needed! The site was peaceful and friendly. The toilets was immaculate and cleaned many times throughout the day. The walk to the reservoir through the forest is beautiful and very manageable for all. We will definitely be going back

Liked: Very much, kids were not impressed with lack of signal when we arrived but were really happy at the end. Even said having no phone wasn't too bad and they want to go camping again 😊 Really nice owner, very friendly and professional. Recommend to anyone who needs a break from a busy daily life

Liked: It was a cheap no frills kinda site. Owner came to speak with us and gave us an information sheet. Temporary toilets that were kept clean

Disliked: We had no phone coverage or Wi-Fi. This is not the owners fault but we did not realise this and could not complete our arrangements for the following day!

Liked: A lovely little site for a short stay, in a beautiful location. We were greeted when we arrived. The facilities were basic, but perfectly adequate - 2 portaloo's and cold drinking water only. Great walking routes and the scenery was stunning. Very little mobile signal, but we loved that, as we could fully switch off.

Disliked: No recycling or rubbish point, but we were made aware of this before our arrival.

Local attractions

You’re never short of an ancient building in this corner of Wales; start off a day off castle-bagging at Usk (10 minutes’ drive) where medieval ruins border landscaped gardens, or head for Raglan, once a mighty defence castle and now open for self-guided tours. Moated Caerphilly Castle (35 minutes) has a trail of underground passages to explore, and if you haven’t had your fill of history by now, try glorious Tintern Abbey (40 minutes) for a stroll among peaceful ruins. If you’d rather be yomping than mugging up on history, there are plenty of challenging hikes in the Brecon Beacons National Park (15 minutes) or stroll to Symonds Yat Rock in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (40 minutes). The whole area is full of places to get out for a great walk or bike ride, and there's dry slope skiing in Pontypool too. If the kids are behaving, treat them to subterranean mine tours at Big Pit National Coal Museum (20 minutes), and if you all fancy a big city day out, Cardiff (45 minutes) hits the spot with rip-roaring RIB cruises around the bay and international musicals at Wales Millennium Centre.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.
Guide dogs are allowed on site free of charge.
The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Motorbike(s) can be brought instead of the car(s) included.

General

In the event of a complaint, please speak to reception immediately. Complaints which are not brought to the management's attention during your stay cannot be dealt with once you have left the site.
Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.
Quiet hours must be respected between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m..
Radio, music and TV players must be kept at a low volume. Car doors and boots must be closed quietly.
