Decking outside a pod

  • Cosy glamping pods with lake views near Chepstow in Monmouthshire
  • Tintern Abbey and Chepstow Castle 15 minutes’ drive: Forest of Dean 40
  • Proper beds and private decking; woodland walks direct from the site
Neatly spaced out and overlooking a lake and trees, the gorgeous Fairoak Lakes camping pods sit in a secluded valley near Chepstow in Monmouthshire. They’re surrounded by 10 acres of woodland and fields for that relaxing, back-to-nature vibe, and as well as your neighbours the resident goats, you’re more than likely to see plenty of local wildlife flitting around. This tiny rural site is family run; the owners built the wooden pods themselves and each is proudly named and themed after a woodland animal that you might just spot hereabouts. When it comes to the details, each unit is heated by electricity and fitted out with comfy double beds and a kitchenette with all the essentials. Outside is a private decking area where you can cosy up for barbecues, and handy family facilities away from the pods include showers with plenty of hot water as well as a parent and baby washroom. Access woodland walks and mountain-bike trails direct from the site, and the Offa’s Dyke hiking trail starts in nearby Chepstow (15 minutes’ drive), where you can also pick up supplies for your supper or have a night out in the town’s pubs and restaurants.

Camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked: With two adventurous and outdoorsy boys, Fairoak lakes was simply perfect. A tranquil and stunning location, in the midst of picturesque forest, we spotted a kingfisher and some deer. The peace and quiet is indescribable, the owners were friendly and welcoming and fantastic with my sons and the animals both wild and tame were fascinating. I cannot recommend this place enough, it took my breath away and I will definitely return

Disliked: For us, nothing!

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Gorgeous peaceful site, photos don’t do it justice! The pod was lovely, spacious and cozy, with its own deck and chairs/table. Thoughtfully included a small fridge, kettle, toaster, proper sized mugs for tea, tumblers and BBQ utensils. There is a cute little electric fire which is super efficient! Enclosed shower/toilet/sink units were well proportioned and always well stocked and cleaned. Eggs and animal feed available from an honesty box by the showers and yes I spent all weekend feeding the ducks. We had the most wholesome, lovely break! Coal was available to purchase for the BBQ as well as logs for the firepit (each pod has its own which is fab). Honestly feel blessed to have found this little gem. I also loved the detailed welcome email we got beforehand, and they were really responsive and friendly. We only had a couple of days but will definitely return for a longer period!

Disliked: Nothing.

Camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked: Facilities in pod were perfect, kettle/fridge/comfy bed for us and a camp bed each for kids. Night light and little heater. BBQ and fire pit. Lovely toilet/shower units. Honesty box with bird seed and goat/horse food. Kids loved feeding the many ducks and geese. Had a swim in the lake which was amazing. Some beautiful walks around the lakes or further afield if you go out of the site. Joe and Rio were just lovely, kind and helpful. Just such a lovely, lovely feel about the place and my two teenagers loved it / says it all!! Thank you so much for a very relaxing, stress-free break.

Disliked: Nothing at all I have to say!

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: We went here last year and had an amazing time, so we decided to come back this year. Its such an amazing place, really peaceful and set in a stunning 😍 location. Pods set near a lake (where you can do some wild swimming. Which our son really enjoyed) lots to see and do near by. 😀 the young family that run it are really lovely and are there to help if you have any questions. We enjoyed feeding the ducks🦆,geese, goats 🐐 and horse 🐎 and an occasional visit from a heron house Martins are interesting to watch in the evening too. I can not recommend this place enough. The access roads to it are lovely too and a bit over grown in places but with a chat with the owners soon gave us another route and it's easier to get to, that being said that's part of its charm. Please check it out for yourselves just not too many of you because we intend to go back 😄😘. Thank you to our wonderful hosts who made out holiday a great one. 😘

Disliked: There's truly not a single thing we disliked.

Local attractions

This is a region with bags of history, and there’s no better place to start learning about it than at Tintern Abbey, with photogenic ruins sitting on the banks of the River Wye since it was sacked in the 16th century. Built in medieval times to defend the English and Welsh borders, clifftop Chepstow Castle (both 15 minutes’ drive), is now open for circular walks around its grounds. If fabulous gardens are more your thing, head for walkways fringed with yew and beech hedges at Veddw House Garden (five minutes, open in summer) or explore the fairytale follies at Dewstow Gardens and Grottoes (20 minutes). The Forest of Dean has walks aplenty as well as cycling trails – rent a bike from the Forest of Dean Cycle Centre if needs be – as well as a sculpture trail with stained-glass windows and brightly coloured obelisks. For more active days out, go whitewater rafting on the River Wye or take the kids on Gruffalo-hunting expeditions around the lake at Mallards Pike (all 40 minutes).
