Cae Glas Camping: View from the bell tent

General

  • Peaceful farm site in the Brecon Beacons, five minutes from Abercraf
  • A five-minute drive to the National Showcaves; 45 mins to Pen y Fan
  • Gorgeous mountain views on site; pony treks and waterfalls close by

So quiet you can hear the owls hooting after dark – sound like the kind of place for you? Then get along to Glamorgan and Cae Glas Camping, in the Brecon Beacons National Park and five minutes’ drive from the village of Abercraf.

That blissful peace and quiet is the reason most guests cite for choosing a stay here – and as such you’ll be asked to keep the noise down, particularly after dark, to ensure a sense of calm for both visitors and wildlife.

To further boost that peaceful vibe facilities have been kept to a minimum, but all guests will have access to toilets, showers and a washing-up area and are welcome to bring along dogs and barbecues. There's a firepit area here too, and firewood can be purchased on site.

There are some stunning mountain views to be had here, and sitting down to admire them for a while is a most rewarding option. That said, there’s plenty of activity nearby should you wish: this is waterfall walk country, and a riding centre just down the road that can sort pony treks for all the family. It’s also a short drive to get to places like Craig y Nos Castle and the National Showcaves Centre for Wales or a slightly longer one (about 45 minutes) to Pen y Fan, the National Botanic Garden of Wales and the beaches of the Gower Peninsula.

Weather was torrential rain and the hosts kindly allowed me to stay in their bell tent at no extra cost to save me pitching up my tiny tent! Very generous of them. Site has beautiful views and a walk up Black Mountain nearby. Site had one toilet and shower which had hot water and hot towel rail, well needed in the bad weather.

Mel and Arron were both friendly and very helpful with any thing we needed.
The site is on a small farm and the views are excellent with hills and valleys all
in view without having to move. The mist and clouds giving some excellent photo opportunities.
The cabin (see photos) should be available next year; built by Mel and Arron in their spare time.

    Disliked:

Sat nav didn't recognise post code.
Path could have been cut to Bell tents but understandably it was the end of the season so the grass was being left for grazing.

Lovely site on a hill with amazing views. Only one bathroom but clean with running hot water.
Not the biggest camping site but thera was only one other tent so plenty of room to choose from.
Friendly hosts although not seen much of them.

    Disliked:

The only negative comment is that the grass was really long so it was difficult to find all the pegs in the ground after packing up.

A peaceful, quiet location free from any urban noises but not so far from civilisation that you couldn't go to the local shops or one of a couple of local pubs for supplies etc.

A stunning location with great views too.

The site has a heated bathroom with toilet and shower which was very welcome. It also has a couple of porta-loos too. Outdoor washing facilities and fresh water are available too.

I never tried the range of coffees on offer or a "bacon butty" but its a nice touch if you don't want to cook breakfast.

Parking is available on a hard surface (Good for Motorbikes and therefore me) although parking next to your tent is also available too.

Local attractions

Once you’ve dragged yourselves away from the views on site, it’s time to explore the surrounding area. Start close by with a horseback trek from the local stables (five minutes’ drive) or a walk to Henrhyd Falls (10 minutes). The National Showcaves Centre for Wales (five minutes) is a fab place to visit on any day, but makes a particularly good option for a wet-weather day out.

If the nippers need a little break from all the scenery admiring, perhaps they’d appreciate a visit to meet the cheeky residents of Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary (10 minutes). And if the grownups need a treat to spur them along to the end of a hike, maybe a little something from the whisky and gin selections at Penderyn Distillery (25 minutes)?

A bit further afield there’s plenty to explore around the Brecon Beacons National Park, including the splendid Four Falls Walk (half an hour) and the uphill challenge of Pen y Fan (45 minutes), the tallest British peak south of Snowdonia. The National Botanic Garden of Wales and Mumbles beach are both 45 minutes away if you’re after something a little less energetic.

Must see

  • National Showcaves of Wales (0.8 miles)
  • Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre (8.1 miles)
