  • Family-run caravan park with spectacular sea views
  • Under a mile from Rhoose and 15 minutes' drive from Barry Island
  • Beer garden with play area, bar serving food, pools and gym
If the thought of the gym doesn't tempt you while on hol, how about a beer garden instead? And spectacular views on a spotless and modern park right on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast – with plenty to do for guests great and small? Have a viewsome and well-equipped stay at Fontygary Leisure Park. Newly built and opened in 2015 less than a mile from the lively little town of Rhoose, Fontygary is a family-run park with lush views over Fontygary's bay and over the Glamorgan coast. Barry Island is 15 minutes' drive away for amusing times and Cardiff within 35 minutes for city sightseeing, but if you don't want to stir even that far, the 14 miles of the heritage coast are within easy reach for rambles. Settle down in the handily placed beer garden to drink them all in (even more handily, the play area is here too), then rouse yourself to investigate some of the plentiful leisure facilities on the park: there's tidal bowling as well as a 25-metre pool with waterslide and splash pool available to guests for an extra charge; a family entertainment lounge with bar, café and kids' activity areas, and regular events from family shenanigans to wedding fairs. Food is dished up at the Shoreway bar, to have indoors or outside among the Glamorgan coast views: meals are offered all day from 9am and include Sunday roasts, kids' meals and weekly deals. The Shoreway is also the venue for (adults only, please) evening entertainment at weekends including cabaret, discos and talent competitions (subject to change), and for main sporting matches on the big screen. Excellent amenities are throughout the park, including an immaculate washroom block with wheelchair accessible showers and toilets. Barbecues are allowed and gas cylinders are available for sale.

Local attractions

The Glamorgan Heritage Coast runs for 14 crackingly scenic miles from Aberthaw (a mile and a half from Fontygary Leisure Park) to Porthcawl, westwards via cliffs, coves and stunning sea views. It's doable by foot or bike; if you thirst for more knowledge on the coast, its critters and its history, the Glamorgan Coast Heritage Centre is half an hour's drive away at Brigend. Barry Island 15 minutes' drive east is home to a handsome sandy beach as well as the rides and amusements of Barry Island Pleasure Park. For hiking from here, access the mighty Wales Coast Path on its detour loops around Barry Island to scramble on the 10 and a half miles – or part thereof – towards Llantwit Major. The Welsh Hawking Centre and its 200 birds of prey is 10 minutes' drive away, towards Barry.
